  • Multi-functional handle allows the user to: unblock the rope and control the descent with the hand on the free end of the rope and get into position without having to tie off the device
  • The automatic return system on the handle limits risks in case of an involuntary action by the user
  • Handle storage position reduces the risk of snagging when the descender is being carried on the harness
  • The safety gate on the moving side plate helps prevent dropping the device and facilitates installation of the rope when passing intermediate anchors
  • Pivoting cam facilitates taking up the slack in the rope; can also be used to make a reversible haul system, and for short ascents (in conjunction with a FOOTPRO foot loop and an ASCENSION handled rope clamp)
  • Lowers heavy loads up to 200 kg (only for expert users; consult the Instructions for Use for the device)

What I noticed after first rigging it up (which was completely intuitive) was that it features a very quick descent. I liken it to the friction that you would receive while using a Figure 8 and thus very fast and smooth.

I've consulted with other users of the device and each has relayed the same thing - "rely on your brake hand for control of the device, and hold the cam wide open." The reason for holding the cam wide open and using your brake hand to control descent is to limit the amount of friction and thus heat generated by the rope rubbing against the cam; which is a sure way to cause rope burn and related problems.

As far as it's other features like the work positioning lock off. I also love it. I'm mostly a tree climber and sometimes there are situations when it's to my advantage to be able to use both hands when navigating through branches on my way down; the lock off feature enables me to do this on a moments notice and then just as easily continue on my way.

As far as ascent goes, (presumably on the RADS System) Petzl is right that it should only be used for short ascents, not that long one's aren't possible but it sure would take much longer. It would be better to use a more efficient system to ascend and then install the Rig for the ride down.

The build quality is awesome like most of Petzl's other products and the swing gate that allows the device to stay attached to the harness but still accept installation of the rope is super convenient.

Oh one last thing. If you want you can use the Rig as part of a haul system as long as you stay within it's load limits. It functions much like a Pro Traxion or Mini Traxion pulley but without the teeth and has a built in release lever for lowering. Pretty nice I'd say.

We use it for tree climbing and it works great. The locking portion works just as described on 11.5mm rope ( the largest it will handle) Haven't used it as an ascender yet.

Awesome product for controlled belays, work placement and beginners! I got this to use to place myself on a steep slope for re-roofing, worked great. This is very expensive compared to a simple figure 8 for controlled descent and/or a prusik for placement but you will feel much more secure with this and be much more comfortable letting a beginner use it. Petzl has some great videos out there on how to use it.

That being said I would never purchase from Bailey's Power Equipment again, either through amazon or direct. They still owe me $10 and hours of my time spent straightening out the errors they made on my order. Amazon should not work with such companies.
