Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Fidji pepper and salt mills from Peugeot add contemporary elegance to the table with their sleek, hour-glass-shaped wooden bases and stainless-steel tops. Each top displays the Peugeot name and signature lion icon, and either an S or P to differentiate the salt and pepper. The difference between the two lies in the grinding mechanism. Peugeot pepper mills use case-hardened-steel grinding heads with two sizes of grooves; the larger grooves crack the peppercorns in half and direct them into the smaller grooves, which grind them much more finely than most mills. The grinding mechanism in Peugeot salt mills is purposefully constructed with 18/10 stainless-steel, which won't corrode from prolonged contact with the salt. The top of each mill unscrews for adding peppercorns or salt, while the round ball nut can be loosened or tightened to vary the coarseness of the grind.

Fidji pepper and salt mills make exceptional gifts individually or as a set. The mills come in a variety of heights, from 4-3/4 to 10-3/4 inches, and in a variety of finishes, including matte black, cherry, and natural wood, and a shiny black or red lacquer. Care for a mill is easy: clean the exterior and inner chamber with a damp cloth; never immerse in water; avoid putting salt in the pepper mill, or grinding green or pink peppercorns by themselves (mixed with black is fine); and avoid damp types of salt (usually pink or gray) in the regular salt mill. Made in France, Peugeot mills are covered by a two-year replacement policy, while the grinding mechanism is covered by a lifetime warranty. Peugeot has been a leading manufacturer of pepper mills since the 1840s, and is a brand preferred by many restaurants and chefs. --Ann Bieri

From the Manufacturer

The Peugeot Fidji 8-inch peppermill brings true fashion to any table. The design features a natural-colored hardwood base and a stainless-steel dome that proudly bears the Peugeot mark. The mill's channeling grooves (the larger ones) are designed to line up the peppercorns with the grinding grooves (the smaller ones), and to crack the corns in half before the actual fine grinding process. The grooves are cut individually into the metal, which is then case hardened, making the grinding nut and head as hard as a ball bearing. Peugeot has been making pepper mills since 1842, and is still a leader in the field of mill manufacturing.

This review is from: Peugeot Fidji 8-1/4-Inch Pepper Mill, Natural (Kitchen)
I had a lesser pepper mill for many years and found it very functional. I didn't see the need for a premium pepper mill because I figured they all grind pepper, right? HOW WRONG I WAS! When it came time to replace my pepper mill, I did some research and was impressed with the feel of the premium mills at the gormet kitchen stores. Of all the brands that I saw I was most impressed with the Peugeot and Williams Bond. After looking at the mechanisms I felt that the Peugot looks and feels more solid than the Williams Bond. I also liked the infinately variable grind selector which the peugeot has. When using the pepper mill, the peugeot feels solid. it never gets stuck on a pepper corn like my old one used to. The cast steel grind mechanism is designed with channels to guide the pepper corns to the grinder. It cracks the pepper corns before the final grind. But the important part is what comes out the bottom. The fine pepper grind is finer than I've seen on any other mill, similar to a fine dust. At any grind selection, the pepper is very consistant. My old mill used to get loosened up when used a lot, so I had to keep adjusting it, not with my Peugeot, you can select extremely fine to coarse and thats what you will get. I'm getting one of these for my mom.
