Fidji pepper and salt mills from Peugeot add contemporary elegance to the table with their sleek, hour-glass-shaped wooden bases and stainless-steel tops. Each top displays the Peugeot name and signature lion icon, and either an S or P to differentiate the salt and pepper. The difference between the two lies in the grinding mechanism. Peugeot pepper mills use case-hardened-steel grinding heads with two sizes of grooves; the larger grooves crack the peppercorns in half and direct them into the smaller grooves, which grind them much more finely than most mills. The grinding mechanism in Peugeot salt mills is purposefully constructed with 18/10 stainless-steel, which won't corrode from prolonged contact with the salt. The top of each mill unscrews for adding peppercorns or salt, while the round ball nut can be loosened or tightened to vary the coarseness of the grind.

Fidji pepper and salt mills make exceptional gifts individually or as a set. The mills come in a variety of heights, from 4-3/4 to 10-3/4 inches, and in a variety of finishes, including matte black, cherry, and natural wood, and a shiny black or red lacquer. Care for a mill is easy: clean the exterior and inner chamber with a damp cloth; never immerse in water; avoid putting salt in the pepper mill, or grinding green or pink peppercorns by themselves (mixed with black is fine); and avoid damp types of salt (usually pink or gray) in the regular salt mill. Made in France, Peugeot mills are covered by a two-year replacement policy, while the grinding mechanism is covered by a lifetime warranty. I bought this as a gift for my husband with the matching salt grinder. We've been through about two pepper grinders and they never seem to hold up over the long haul. With this one, I am hoping we will not need to make another purchase, and so far it is by far the best pepper grinder right from the start - you don't have to grind and grind and grind to get a decent amount of pepper out!

The black wood is attractive and the size fits well in the hand. The only drawback, and this is minor, is that it was packaged just loose in the box, with only a small tag around the neck where I was hoping for perhaps a bit of documentation on how to care for it or what to do if it breaks (after all, this was not a cheapo pepper grinder)!

I heard about these through Tony Maws, a prominent Boston chef, and since I needed a second grinder I took the plunge. It's surprisingly transformative in a quiet way; because it grinds pepper so well and so easily, I'm using significantly more pepper in my cooking. It really is a joy to use.

I bought this grinder after hearing good things about the brand and I have to say I'm a little disappointed. The grind adjustment feature is sort of a byproduct of the design and not a feature in itself. Also, the top "gear" seems to rotate off the top of the grinder because the internal grinding mechanism is not fixed in its place. Other than that, the grind is consistent and terrific. The piece is visually pleasing, but I'm a cook and I look for utility before appearance. All in all I'd say it is worth the money especially compared to some of the ones at Williams-Sonoma.
