Employing the famed mechanism invented in 1842 by renowned French manufacturer Peugeot, this sleek, contemporary mill delivers a shower of freshly ground pepper when its top is twisted. As was true when Peugeot produced the world's first pepper mill, grooves in a Peugeot grinding mechanism are individually cut into steel, and the mechanism is then hardened, making it virtually indestructible and deserving of its lifetime warranty against defects. Filling the mill requires unscrewing the ball-shaped knob and lifting off the top. Heavy and first-rate, the 8-inch mill is made of 18/10 stainless steel brushed to a satin finish. --Fred Brack

This is an elegantly designed, precisely made, sturdy product that looks as if it would last forever. Unfortunately, it doesn't suit me because I really, really like pepper - lots of it, very coarsely ground, and the throughput on this mill is just plain wimpy. If you like a lot of pepper on your food, or prefer your pepper not ground much further than cracked, this is not your mill.

Do you have difficulty turning your pepper grinder or suffer from arthritis in your hands? This is the pepper mill for you. I bought it on a trip to Heidelburg, Germany at a fancy store, paying US equivalent of $80. It is beautiful. After I saw it, I wasn't able to consider any other mill in the store.

I have used it for three years. Sometimes I forget how to take it apart to fill it with peppercorns, but other than the less than intuitive design for filling, I have no complaints! It grinds like a dream and it is very easy to adjust the coarseness of your ground pepper. Now I have the ability to grind peppercorns coarsely for au poivre dishes instead of chasing them all over with a hammer! And with a lifetime warranty on the mechanism, why wouldn't you want one?

I have owned several Peugeot pepper mills over the years and the grinding mechanism is unsurpassed. The mechanism itself is practically indestructible but wooden or acrylic construction can eventually break (though admitedly infrequently). This stainless steel model seems VERY durable. To top it off, it looks as sleek in real life as in the Amazon.com picture -- without sacrificing quality and functionality.
