Sochaux pepper and salt mills from Peugeot are stunning examples of contemporary design. Each sleek cylinder is constructed of 18/10 stainless steel and brushed to a satiny finish. The large wheel on top unscrews for adding peppercorns and salt, and can be loosened or tightened to vary the coarseness of the grind. The top also displays either an S or P to differentiate the salt and pepper. The main difference between the two lies in the grinding mechanism. Peugeot pepper mills use case-hardened-steel grinding heads with two sizes of grooves; the larger grooves crack the peppercorns in half and direct them into the smaller grooves, which grind them much more finely and evenly than most mills. The grinding mechanism in Peugeot salt mills is purposefully constructed with 18/10 stainless-steel, which won't corrode from prolonged contact with the salt.
A striking gift for the connoisseur of freshly ground pepper or salt, Sochaux mills come only in a 5-1/2-inch height. Care for a mill is easy: clean the exterior and inner chamber with a damp cloth; never immerse in water; avoid putting salt in the pepper mill, or grinding green or pink peppercorns by themselves (mixed with black is fine); and avoid damp types of salt (usually pink or gray) in the regular salt mill. I have used peppermills all my life and had heard Peugeot was the, um, Rolls Royce of the culinary world.And indeed, it is.The only problem is that after a year of use, the top fell apart and could not be put back together again. Total loss. Problem is, the guarantee I mention below, has no instructions for return, no address, no phone, and is totally useless. A promise with no substance or backup. So despite the five star review I gave this earlier, I would avoid at all costs. The claim of a guarantee is just advertising copy, not real. As described, the pepper that is created by this marvel is very uniform in size.You can adjust it from very course or extra fine. It is the fine setting which is so astounding, finer and "peppier" than any other mill I have ever used!Over the years I spent the price of this mill many times over, as the previous ones malfunctioned or failed after a year or two. Unlike those disappointments, Peugeot has a lifetime guarantee should I ever need it.Why did I wait so long....that is the only question left.

I received this product and it had a small amount of peppercorns inside. The product box had no plastic wrap and was slightly crushed on the edges. All of this led me to believe that the unit had been previously used and returned. Amazon sent a speedy replacement and it also had peppercorns inside! I cannot attest to the durability of the grinder as I just received it. However, it grinds beautifully and I just want others to know that it is normal to receive this unit with peppercorns inside. I believe that it may be to keep the grinding mechanism in place; however, i could be wrong about the reason... Beautiful grinder, just beware of this small fact upon delivery.Update Oct. 10 2010: After using this for more than a year, I can vouch that it's a great pepper mill. I am looking to purchase the salt mill to go with it. You get what you pay for! Updated Jan. 15 2012: Still going strong, great pepper mill. We use it every day!

After only a couple years of using this grinder, the metal tubes that connect the body of the mill to the circular mechanism at the top began to fall out. It became very frustrating to use, because as I ground pepper, a metal tube would fall out and land in my food. I finally gave up and bought a new mill. Very poor design for such an expensive pepper mill.
