Sochaux pepper and salt mills from Peugeot are stunning examples of contemporary design. Each sleek cylinder is constructed of 18/10 stainless steel and brushed to a satiny finish. The large wheel on top unscrews for adding peppercorns and salt, and can be loosened or tightened to vary the coarseness of the grind. The top also displays either an S or P to differentiate the salt and pepper. The main difference between the two lies in the grinding mechanism. Peugeot pepper mills use case-hardened-steel grinding heads with two sizes of grooves; the larger grooves crack the peppercorns in half and direct them into the smaller grooves, which grind them much more finely and evenly than most mills. The grinding mechanism in Peugeot salt mills is purposefully constructed with 18/10 stainless-steel, which won't corrode from prolonged contact with the salt.
A striking gift for the connoisseur of freshly ground pepper or salt, Sochaux mills come only in a 5-1/2-inch height. Care for a mill is easy: clean the exterior and inner chamber with a damp cloth; never immerse in water; avoid putting salt in the pepper mill, or grinding green or pink peppercorns by themselves (mixed with black is fine); and avoid damp types of salt (usually pink or gray) in the regular salt mill. Made in France, Peugeot mills are covered by a two-year replacement policy, while the grinding mechanism is covered by a lifetime warranty. Peugeot has been a leading manufacturer of pepper mills since the 1840s, and is a brand preferred by many restaurants and chefs. --Ann Bieri
From the Manufacturer
The Peugeot Sochaux peppermill makes all the difference when peppering your foods. The sleek French grinder is made of brushed 18/10 stainless steel and features a tough, finely crafted steel mechanism. The peppermill adjusts from fine to coarse, and cracks the peppercorns before grinding them for a more pungent, uniform grind. The peppermill is 5-1/2 inches tall, and its stainless mechanism is protected by a lifetime warranty. Peugeot has been making pepper mills since 1842, and is still a leader in the field.
