5.0 out of 5 stars Good Old Style Songs!, June 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Peyote Ceremonial Songs (Audio CD)
This compilation of prayer songs of the Native American Church is an excellent example of "old style" songs and singing styles. It is quite different from the modern electronically enhanced versions of peyote songs that have echoes and harmonies, which in my opinion turn the traditional songs into a more of a commercial product. This CD has some singing by elders who have now passed away, leaving behind a recording enriched by a traditional ceremonial history that most of us will never get to witness in this lifetime. Easy going songs, the insert explains the timing and use of the songs for those searching for the genuine stuff!

As a white man who has never experienced the Native American Church ceremonies, I don't really know good peyote music from bad. However, I've listened to a lot of peyote music and I like this CD. It's a good representative CD. There are a few production issues (the sounds goes fuzzy in a couple of places). But that just makes the CD seem more authentic.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb contribution to Native American studies & music., August 6, 2000
This review is from: Peyote Ceremonial Songs (Audio CD)
Founded in the mid-1800's, the Native American Church developed a ritual around the sue of peyote cactus as a part of the worship ceremony and philosophy. The peyote ceremony includes prayers and quiet meditation songs accompanied by rattle and water-drum. A highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library Native American studies collections, Peyote Ceremonial Songs showcases vintage peyote recordings with Opening Prayer Song; Morning Water Song; Sunrise Song; Peyote Song; Peyote Occasional Song #1; Peyote Occasional Song #2; Peyote Spirit Song; Omaha Morning Song; Peyote Ceremonial Song #1; Peyote Ceremonial Song #2; Omaha Prayer Song; Midnight Water Song; Our Father's Thoughts Are Shining Down; Another Morning Song; and Seven Peyote Songs. Total Time: 43:38.
