In the blues circles, there are a lot folks I hear from who are NOT Reverend Peyton fans, which I find astonishing. I hardly know what to say to those people. Let's see, the Rev's an avowed country blues fan, and it shows in every single recording of his that I have heard (this is my fifth album of his). Hey, more power to the Rev for convincing the 19-29 year olds to listen to him!!!!!!

So here the Reverend pays tribute to one of his favorites (his #1 favorite?), Charlie Patton, and it is clearly a guitar/vocal outing. There is little else - percussion, where heard, is hands beating a barrel, and the wild washboard is absent. The notes state that he carefully culled Patton's sides to find a good representation. He succeeds - blues, novelty and gospel all are here.

Look, I am NOT going to go through and pick apart this and that. If you are going to judge the Rev on whether he has done a note-for-note copy, I can't help. I enjoy the recording and am not interested in an academic exercise. Gee, did the Rev change keys from the originals? I did not check and don't plan to.

It is a loving tribute, clearly well-researched and thought-out, and captures the spirit and feel of the originals. This is a very enjoyable listen, and the songs are all short and to the point. I say it is a great success and I sincerely hope that fans of Reverend Peyton will grab up JSP and Yazoo reissues of Charley Patton after hearing this.

Reverend Peyton deserves a lot of credit for what has done for country blues even before this. Now he deserves a blues Nobel Prize! Buy it, love it, and explore the vast world of 1920's-30's country blues. I hope the Reverend will do more: Son House and Bukka White are two that deserve the "treatment".

All in all, a wonderful album. Great vocals, great playing, and perfectly presented music. I would think that Patton would be happy with Peyton!

The Reverend Peytons Big Damn Band consist of three talented musicians that bang out a tune like no other. Very unique style but almost a throwback to the old blues performers of yesterday. I like his tone in his voice and the pickin'. His cover of the blues great is very well done. You will enjoy it if you like earth blues!
