Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Dr. Seuss' easy-to-read rhymes about such unusual animals as las mascotas amarillas/todas se llaman Zedillas (yellow pets called the Zeds) appear here in lilting Spanish. Some beginning readers may be confused by the lack of connection from one rhyme to the next, but everyone will enjoy the author-artist's vivacious, recognizable art. REVWR

Dr. Seuss is all about rhymes...this literal translation was obviously commissioned by someone only interested in making a few bucks, no consideration for the story or the kids reading it. Unfortunately, I did not realize that when I bought this book.

SAVE YOUR MONEY!

I now ONLY buy Seuss traslations by Aida E. Marcuse, those are done properly. My kids love them!

One of the best, Huevos Verde con Jamon...Si me gusto Juan Ramon!

The brilliance of Dr. Seuss is found as much in his illustrations as in his rhymes. While the former is universally appealing, the latter is difficult to translate. Other Dr. Seuss translations have suffered from being too literal, and thus lacking the original musicality. (The Cat in the Hat is a case in point). This translation brings Dr. Seuss to life in Spanish with clever turns of phrase and appropriate (rhyming) use of idiom that still syncs up with the illustrations. One of my favorite passages, accompanying illustrations of a fish with a star and a fish in a car, is:
Este tiene una estrella.
Este corre a todo dar.
Va tan rápido en su auto
que se va a estrellar.

I love this book! The translation is excellent and the rhymes are very funny! I read it to my nieces, who are bilingual, and they enjoyed it as much, if not more, than the English version. I own both the original version and the Spanish translation. Both of them are great!

So many of my friends who are the first generation living in the US, they grew up speaking a different language, are frustrated with how little their children speak of their language. I had purchased this book for my nephew, whose mother is a 2nd generation Mexican; when speaking to my brother about the language challenge, he said that it isn't so much the 2nd generation to the US that care as much about this. BUT when my nephew's abuelita comes over, it brings great joy to her heart to find something she can read to her little nieto. It is a wonderful way to support growing up with 2 languages.

I am a native Spanish speaker and find this book pretty fun to read. I do not agree with some of the other negative reviews and think that the rhymes are nice and catchy, better than other Dr. Seuss books I've seen, and my daughter loves it.

What child does not like Dr. Seuss? This book is a nice simple Spanish translation, easliy understood by even a 1 1/2 year old. Great for learning colors and numbers.

I'm a 29-year old who's trying to learn Spanish. I'm pretty familiar with the English version, and my little brother watched the English VHS endlessly when we were children. So this is a fun, familiar, and retro-awesome way to improve my basic vocabulary. My wife and I have been going through about 1/3 of the book every day, looking up words and trying to understand the relation between them and their English counterparts.

I agree that if you didn't like the English version, it won't be any better in Spanish. Regarding the translation, some of the rhymes are great and some are nonexistent. And, no, there isn't much of a story. There never was.

Where this book really shines for my purpose is that almost every page has one or more pairs of words that are somehow related. Sometimes they're opposites ( acá y allá, jóvenes y ancianos), and sometimes they're different classes of the same thing ( roja y azul ). There are also lots of questions, interjections, and even a few salutations.

I love dr.Seuss now! I thought the translations wouldn't work, but they are great! It all makes perfect sense (Im native speaker of Spanish) and I love the rhythm, the rhymes, and games with words.... And this particular book I think could be great for people with a smaller command of Spanish because it has very basic words and phrases, it starts with things like "big fish, small fish, tall fish, short fish, fat fish, thin fish, this fish has a star, this fish has a hat, the fat fish has a cat...." which going together with the drawing of the fish, is a great way to learn basic Spanish words!! totally recommend for anybody :)
