Another "nice, but...",

I totally agree with a previous reviewer. I love how these look, but they DO chip REALLY, REALLY easily. I've only had these for about 6 months...almost every piece that we use regularly has ended up with a chip somehow. Albeit, little ones, but there are multiple chips on some pieces. And I too am not sure where they come from...they just "appear." :( This is disappointing.

They chip REALLY REALLY easily. I'm VERY careful with handling my dishes--I don't put them in the microwave so as not to make them brittle or whatever. I wash them in the dishwasher, so I'm not chipping them in the sink. I don't get it.

Don't buy this set if you want to use them for more than a year!,

I wish I had read the other reviews before I bought two sets. They CHIP SO EASILY it is ridiculous. One bowl was chipped the first day I had them - and now, six months later - almost every piece has been chipped. In addition they do overheat badly in the microwave - my husband and I have both burned our hands on them.
These dishes are beautiful - but really - dishes are useless if you can USE them. I bought these dishes to replace a 10 year old set of everyday dishes that I was tired of - and shopped for a while to find a color and pattern that I really liked. Looks like I will be shopping for another set again soon.

Not even 1 star --CHIPS,

These are the worst crafted plates in the pfaltzgraff line. Look nice when new. I have had them for a year and almost half are chipped. They chip without any improper handling, I am a 34 year old and am not rough on my dishes or mugs. A waste of money. THUMBS DOWN

Rated a 1 because 0 was not an option.
I purchased (4) 16 piece sets (service for 16) in May. Within weeks I began noticing small chips around the edges of the dinner plates primarily, but also the bowels and salad plates. I know I am very careful with my dishes (my old everyday set was used for 8 years and has one chipped plate and one chipped bowl) so I do not believe I am the problem. Five months later 10 dinner plates, 4 bowls and 5 salad plates have chipped. Unfortunately, while the chips may be small they can be seen easily because of the outer brown band. So my 5 month old dishes look 25 years old. Out of the 19 dishes with chips only one was "justified" as my sister did bang the plate somewhat hard against the sink. Sadly, since I am the only one who ever does dishes at my house I know firsthand that the dishes have not been mishandled. It takes only a light "touch" (normal everyday life stuff) between dishes for them to chip. I contacted Pfaltzgraff as I believe the dishes are the problem. At first they seemed interested in helping but in my final e-mail with them they recommended that I not let the dishes touch each other. Huh? How would I do that? In my 50 foot cabinet where I lay them next to each other? Carrying them individually when I set or clear the table? I do not believe I have ever heard of dishes that cannot touch each other. Their response was ridiculous. So I am online now looking for new dishes after spending more than $500 on this set (plus $250 more for all the serving pieces). It is too late to return them so I will mark this up as a big mistake and I will never purchase another Pfaltzgraff item in my life.

They absorb water & don't dry,

I bought these dishes from a local department store rather than Amazon.com because I had read the reviews and wanted to be able to return them if necessary without incurring high shipping rates. I thought I would take a chance on the chipping issues I read about since I am very careful with my dishes. Well, I experienced a DIFFERENT problem. I washed these in the dishwasher (the box said they are dishwasher safe) and left them in for the dry cycle too. They seemed totally dry when I took them out of the dishwasher. I stacked them on the counter because I was still in the process of making room for them in my cupboards. Then next day I picked up a plate and the plate underneath it had a wet ring on it. I checked all the other plates - every one had a wet ring from the plate that had been sitting on top of it. It seems these dishes absorbed water through the thin rim on the bottom where it is not glazed, then the water seeped slowly out as they sat on the counter. I dried them all and re-stacked them. The next day - more water seepage! But, less than the first day. It took three days of doing this before they stayed completely dry! I never noticed any seepage from the cups or bowls, but maybe only because they stack in such a way that any seepage would evaporate. The rims on the bottom of the bowls did not touch the inner bowl below it when stacked. Also, because these dishes are EARTHENWARE, they are very, very heavy. They really were beautiful though. I hated to take them back for that reason - but I did return them. There are only two adults in our household, and we don't use all the plates everyday. I was concerned about the water seepage stagnating and maybe developing mold. I didn't want to have to wash my plate again before using it. If you use the plates everyday then the water seepage would not stagnate and would only be a minor annoyance. But they are not for ME.

Just to echo what others have said, our family got this set as a gift at Christmas of '08. Pretty much all of the dishes and bowls are all chipped. The lightest clink with other dinnerware results in a chip! Don't even think of microwaving because the plates absorb all the energy and get really hot while the food does not. We liked the design but probably will be looking elsewhere.

Beautiful, but not practical,
This review is from: Pfaltzgraff Patio Garden 16-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 4 (Kitchen)
I have owned these dishes for a little over a year. They are so pretty, but have two major problems. They chip EXTREMELY easily, and get really hot in the microwave. I am not hard on my dishes. Within a couple of months, I had chips on numerous pieces. After one year, I have more chipped pieces than ones that aren't. Previously, I owned Pfaltzgraff dishes that I had for 15 years, with only one or two chipped pieces the whole time I owned them. I don't know why these are so easy to chip, but I am very disappointed and will not buy Pfaltzgraff again. Very, very disappointing set.

My whole family loves these dishes. I have received tons of compliments on them! The mugs are a great size for hot drinks. They arrived well packaged. I read that there is some concern about them getting really hot in the microwave - but I have yet to have any difficulties. What a great purchase!

I wanted stoneware dishes thinking that they would be sturdy and last and chose these because the company has a good reputation and the pattern was very pretty. I am very disappointed at the way they chip VERY easily. Another disconcerting characteristic is that they smell like mud/wet clay when in the cupboard, even though I dry them thoroughly before they are put away. After reading a review from another user who has mentioned the wet rings on counters from the unglazed portion on the bottom I am also wondering if they are harboring unsafe bacteria/mold. I would not buy them again, and I wish I had returned them.
