I just ordered one of these and found this info on how to use it : "You put the bottom pie crust in the pie plate, then center the bird on the bottom crust and add filling around. Put a hole in the top of pastry crust top, press crust around bird head. Bake and serve with bird. This pie bird allows the steam inside the pie to release thus giving you a PERFECT PIE - no more soggy or runny Pies." Hope this helps.

UPDATE: Received the plate, instructions on how to use are included with the pie bird. The plate and bird are even more beautiful than in the pictures.

I am determined to make Alton Brown's Super Apple Pie recipe and needed a pie bird. I would have paid $14 just for this bird but got a gorgeous plate, too. The directions on the wrapper are clear--place the bottom piecrust on the plate, place the pie bird in the center, place filling around the bird, make a small hole in the middle of the top crust as you place it over the bird. The bird is bigger than it seems in the picture. The bird was in its own wrapping placed in the pie plate, which was then wrapped with a cardboard sleeve, placed in styrofoam peanuts and shipped quickly from Mega China (ordered 12/12, received 12/17). I will be using this set for Christmas!

Usually when I bake an apple pie I have to clean the over afterwards. I was skeptical, but this REALLY works to keep it from running over. And it's beautiful in presentation too.

This pie bird is so neat and the pie plate is beautiful. I had been wanting a pie bird since I first saw them, now I want more. Proof that some very old ideas are still the best! I would suggest this purchase to anyone who bakes apple pies, it does eliminate the runny mess that can happen so often when baking a juicy apple pie.

The pie bird and pie dish lend an air of sophistication and fun to any covered pie. I love it so much I now have three (3) sets. Surprise your next pie crowd with a pie that looks too good to eat, and eat it, they are so gooood.

I bought one for myself and the other as a gift, very pretty pie dish.

I recently purchased perfect pie plates with a cardinal pie bird for three relatives as Xmas gifts. For hard to buy for relatives that you seldom see, they are the perfect present. All three of the recipients were thrilled with their pie plates, especially with the pie bird. I wish I had bought one for myself. Nancy Ward

The pie bird is too big, especially for this size pie plate. Also, the tip of the beak was miscolored and had a small chip. Considering the packaging, this shouldn't have been chipped. The plate is pretty and sturdy.
