Farmer Well Deserves The Diploma,
By
This review is from: Ph D (Audio CD)
This album has really grown on me. At first, I thought it inferior to "Blame It On My Youth", but having let it settle in I find that it is just as pleasing. As expected of this era of Farmer, the trumpeter surrounds himself with an all-star cast, including Kenny Burrell (who now teaches Jazz at UCLA and may very well have a PhD), Clifford Jordan, Rufus Reid, James Williams, and Smitty Smith. The players are all in top-notch form, and pull off this brand of Jazz with verve. Like "Blame", this album reaches a sort of smooth paradigm. Farmer's flugelhorn defines warm and mellow. The addition of Burrell is a special bonus; the master guitarist plays beautifully. Sparkling recording with fantastic imaging. Very highly recommended.
