a dark retelling,
This review is from: Phaedra (American Theatre in Literature Program) (Paperback)
Matthew Maguire's modern update of the Racine tale of forbidden love is a titillating and powerful language driven piece. Maguire's heroes now inhabit the dark canyons of Wall Street, using junk bonds and sexual power plays as their weapons of choice. The piece loses none of the grandeur of the original material while making it accessible to modern sensibilities.

Magnificent Modern tragedy,
By Matthew Saxe (Los Angeles, CA. USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Phaedra (American Theatre in Literature Program) (Paperback)
Maguire takes the themes of Racines play and puts them into our modern world losing none of the searing tragedy of the original story. Filled with a sensuality not seen in playwriting today, Maguires play is filled with language that leaves you breathless, with fascinating characters that both titillate and disgust, touching on issues of greed, capitalism, lust, and the American family. It made me hopeful for the future of the American theatre, and also it inspired me to write my Theatre History paper on Racine. Its simply magnificent.
