More About the Author

Theodor Ebert was born in 1939 in Telgte, a small town in Westphalia/Germany. He was the first of four siblings. After completing his education in a classical secondary school, he went to university in Münster, Heidelberg and Paris (Sorbonne). He took his doctoral degree in philosophy in 1967 from Heidelberg university under the supervision of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Ernst Tugendhat. After finishing his studies at Heidelberg university, he spent the year 1967/68 at Oxford university. He was attached to Brasenose College and pursued studies in analytical and (mainly) ancient philosophy with John Ackrill and Michael Woods. Returning to Germany, he spent some years at the Hegel-Archiv in Bonn and Bochum working on one of the volumes of the new critical edition of Hegel's works. In 1972 he took up a position at Erlangen university. In 1977/78 he worked as a Leverhulme Visiting Fellow at UCL in London. At Erlangen university he held the position of a professor (Extraordinarius) from which he retired in 2004. Theodor Ebert is married to Helga Ebert-Haxel; they have two daughters, Anja and Dörthe.
