Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-Series Christian fiction. This light, breezy mystery reads like an episode of the Saturday-morning cartoon Scooby Doo with a dose of scripture thrown in. Sibling detectives Sean and Melissa Hunter, with the help of their hound Slobs, learn the dangers of greed as they investigate a local legend concerning hidden treasure in an abandoned church scheduled for demolition. The message of the book is conveyed in a heavy-handed fashion. An old homeless man warns the youngsters that in searching for the treasure they should beware of "ZEEG REEED." The kids think there is a monster guarding the cache, ready to devour any trespassers. After a long series of cliffhangers in which the characters get caught up in one disaster after another in a futile attempt to obtain the treasure, they learn the truth about "ZEEG REEED." Sean and Melissa are so blandly drawn that it is hard to become involved in their adventures-readers simply won't care about them. The same can be said for the plot, which sacrifices plausibility for thrills. It's obvious that the kids are never in any real danger and that they will emerge unscathed. Myers tries to inject some humor through hip asides addressed directly to readers, but they, too, fall flat. Series fiction fans may not be demanding readers, but they deserve better offerings than this.

More About the Author

Hi.
Thanks for checking up on me. Probably best to go over to my web site: www.Billmyers.com for biography information. And if you're really bored, there's my fan site over on Facebook:
www.facebook.com/pages/Bill-Myers/44983396181 Oh, and one last thing. If you're a student and your class reads one of my books, I'll do a 'meet the author' 30 min question and answer session by speakerphone with your class from my office here in California. If you're a reader's group, the same thing goes...in which case I'd recommend ELI to really get the discussion juices flowing - at least until THE GOD HATER comes out in 2010. Thanks for stopping by!
