Grade 3-5 Third in the series, The Phantom of the Operetta is not a particularly challenging, intriguing, or believable mystery. Fenton P. Smith and his partner, Gerald Grubbs, set out to find the loot hidden by a recently released bank robber. Before they can begin to solve that mystery, the boys become involved in ferreting out a ghost that haunts an old house being used to stage an amateur opera production. Both problems are too easily resolved without involving readers. Mystery fans should stick with Christian's ``Sebastian (Super Sleuth)'' series (Macmillan) or Hildick's ``McGurk'' books (Macmillan).
