Barney Rostaing grew up in Connecticut and has lived in NY for many years. His thinking was formed by communist parents, jazz music, and the sixties. He has two degrees, and once worked in Army Intelligence.
His main interests have been horse racing, betting on horse racing, and jazz saxophone, which brought him in contact with then-drummer Stanley Crouch, now a noted author and influential cultural critic.
His other main interest is bicycle racing, in which he was active for many years, riding and managing. As a sports writer he traveled Europe extensively, and exposed the '84 US blood doping scandal in Sports Illustrated. Earlier, he was an editor at the Soho Weekly News. In the mid-80's, he won an AFI First Place award for a sports video, and worked with Uma Thurman in Kiss Daddy Goodnight.
After a lost decade in software, he returned to the real world with Breeders. Previous books include Phantom of the Paradise (Dell) and the Bill Walton Book of Bicycling (Bantam).
