Editorial Reviews

Very few rock bands in the 80's attempted to think, or indeed play, outside the box. Most kept to well-worn paths, be it heavy metal, glam rock, punk rock or even pop rock but for Phantom, Rocker & Slick the musical trajectory was new and imaginative; an exciting step in a totally unique direction, combining fifties rockabilly with the cut and thrust of 80's hard rock. Featuring former Stray Cats founders Slim Jim Phantom and Lee Rocker, together with universally well respected guitar hero Earl Slick (David Bowie, John Lennon, John Waite), the band were launched in an explosion of excitement, earning instant acclaim for not only their album but also for a series of incredibly energetic live performances.
Recorded in Los Angeles by Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero (Metallica, Tesla, Guns 'N Roses) and released in 1985, the album features amongst its eleven self-penned tracks, guest appearances from Rolling Stones keyboard alumni Nicky Hopkins and guitarist Keith Richards. Phantom, Rocker & Slick is released as a Special Limited Deluxe Collector's Edition.

Who could have ever paired two thirds of Stray Cats with legendary "GUN FOR HIRE" Earl (BOWIE, JOHN LENNON) Slick? Just as soon as it was announced "THE STRAY CATS WERE FINISHED" backstage at MTV's Guitar Greats, suddenly the debut album from this newest trio hit the shelves. And believe it or not - IT WORKED AMAZINGLY WELL! The album featured hits "What You Want", "My Mystake", "Running From the Hounds", and featured the infectiously guitar driven, Link Wray-ish number, "MEN WITHOUT SHAME!" Slick really shines on this album showcasing plenty of tasty chops and catchy riffs. Lee Rocker really gave Brian Setzer a run for his money on vocals and did I happen to mention the record also features Stones' guitarist - Keith Richards?

I was honored to catch Lee Rocker and Earl Slick at the Iridium jazz club (NYC) back in Feb. 2012 sharing the stage for the first time in 27 years! Rocker's wife mentioned a possible upcoming tour from the boys very soon so keep you eyes out!

Newly remastered cd also features a 16 page booklet, 4,000 word essay, rare photos, memorabilia and new interviews! The album holds up incredibly well and the songs have never sound better! WOW - Slim Jim and Lee Rocker were only 23 when this originally came out!

Thanks for finally making this available on cd! It has always been one of my favorites!

The title song on this album is easily the best of the lot. Yes, the album version of the song is only available on vinyl. (WE'RE MORE THAN READY FOR THE CD, PLEASE!!!!). An abreviated (3 minutes and 47 seconds) version of the song was available on a compilation CD released in the 90's called "Guitar Gods." Not a great CD (nor was it very well produced) but definitely worth listening to if you've never heard Men Without Shame. Unfortunately, the best part of the song, the lead guitar intro, was cut on this version. Again, we're REALLY ready for the CD version fo the original album, Men Without Shame.

One of my favorite albums. I cannot decide which song is my favorite, but you can honestly listen to the whole album from beginning to end and love every moment. Some very rocking songs that literally get your blood pumping! Simply great!

After losing Brian Setzer to a solo career, the remaining members of the'80's light duty rock-a-billy band The Stray Cats needed a new groove. They definitely found it with this debut album. "Men Without Shame" is the standout single. It combines a rough edged buzzsaw guitar with the heavy handed drums and familiar twangy guitar that made the "Cats" so famous. The only downside to their story is that they are only available on vinyl. And as a group they are no more.

I've been waiting for this album to come out in digital format for years. Fortunately, I searched for it tonight (not really expecting to find anything) only to discover that it was put out in MP3 format two weeks ago. Until now, if I wanted to listen to one of their songs, all I had was the well-preserved cassette tape that I bought when the album first came out (or the handful of badly degraded videos posted on YouTube). Phantom, Rocker, and Slick were a heavy-guitar rock band formed in the wake of the Stray Cats, back when tattoos were reserved for sailors and hardcore rockers. I won't go into their history, because if you know them, you probably already like them. They are difficult to classify - they weren't really "heavy metal," they certainly weren't "pop," and although their appearance may scream "rockabilly," they definitely weren't that, either. The best way to describe them is an extremely talented trio who put out a great album of rock songs. I know...everybody has their own list of overlooked and underrated rock bands. But Phantom, Rocker, and Slick are at the top of mine, and I suspect a lot of other people's as well. This is a great album.

After YEARS of trying to get this on disc.... Sigh. The "problem" is: "Men Without Shame" on here is, naturally, the album version. That's NOT the version of the video on MTV; NOT the version of the 45rpm; and is NOT the version that drove me to look for this disc for nearly thirty years. Damnit!!! I can only wish the single edit version was included as, say, a bonus track. It is not. So, if you see a compilation of mid-80's rock'n'roll, and "Men Without Shame" is on the track listing, get that! Lol. Meanwhile, this disc is serviceable. Not great, merely alright. Slick fires out guitar leads; Phantom can play drums; Rocker can sing while playing bass; and Nicky Hopkins and Keith Richard make guest appearances; but the disc just isn't as exciting as the memory of "Men Without Shame" (the single edit). Does it belong in your collection? Only if you're a Stray Cats' completist (and this is nothing like Stray Cats, BTW), or are bent on collecting rock'n'roll "oddities" (but there's nothing odd about the disc... Its actually pedestrian). It's not a disc you're going to have waiting for you to crank up to eleven on your car stereo, cruising in endless loops around the city. Still, it's alright, the lead off, "What You Want," is how you would want a rock'n'roll disc to kick off, then... it's the wait for track six, "Men Without Shame," (and the subsequent longing for that single edit that isn't included). I'm glad this was finally re-released, but then I collect rock'n'roll "oddities".
