This review is from: Phantom of Rue Royale (Nicolas Le Floch Investigation) (Paperback)
Like Parot's other books, this third one in a series about mid-18th century French detective, Nicholas Le Floch, is fun, curious and, best of all, drops the reader smack dab into the culture and political intrigue of the Paris of Louis XVI. The characters don't know that revolution is only a few years and an angry crowd away, but the reader senses the tension building in the disparity between the ruling and the working classes, especially in this book. While the second book, "The Man with the Iron Stomach" was a more fascinating murder mystery, frankly that's not my main motivation for reading this series. I love to be immersed so completely and effectively into another era and culture, and Parot does this so effectively. The quirky characters are icing on the cake. I'm a fan for life.
