Excellent book, and excellent content. (...)
Highly readable book, it was the 1st in the series I read, and I proceeded to read all of Mr Linderer's books and those written by the other LRRPs who served with the 101st in Vietnam!

The Real Stuff,
By Dr. Charles Donaldson (United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Phantom Warriors: Book 2 (Mass Market Paperback)
The stories in this book had to come from the real stuff. Only LRRPs/Rangers who had been there could tell these stories. Not Rambo stuff but brave young men doing special operations. A good eye opener.

Well worth reading!!!,
This review is from: Phantom Warriors: Book 2 (Mass Market Paperback)
Gary Linderer's Phantom Warriors II is a stirring tribute to the LRP/ Rangers of the Vietnam war with stories and accounts from soldiers who had served with these remarkable units. More than this it also takes the reader along on the harrowing patrols and points out page by page another proud legacy of the US Army's 75th Rangers. Linderer has done more than anyone I know to help tell the stories of the LRP/Rangers in Vietnam and should be applauded for his efforts. Buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

Not a big fan, reminds me being an unpopular kid in a Boy Scout Troop.,

I'm not a big fan of any of the authors here...but, I really see a personal vendetta going on here with (1) COMMENT being continually repeated over and over. Ok, d00d, we got your point.
The conflicting reports from various reviewers only make me skeptical of any of he reviews from anyone. If you get two vets together, the number of confirmed kills between the two of them would fill a 5 acre cemetary. Go to the VFW...on a good night, the graves would overflow Rhode Island and spill over to 3 surrounding states. The credibility of some of the reviewers is almost ZERO when you resort to MY LRRP TEAM IS BETTER THAN YOUR TEAM" If this author is lying fine. You made your point. Maybe he is lying out his a**. But, from personal experience the National Records Center does not have all the records. And, what records they do have, could take a man his few remaining years to get corrected. If he could get it corrected after 40+ years. Records can and will be wrong. And, records can be removed, misplaced, altered, and lost. I've got personal experience with the VA telling me that there was no record of my being in Vietnam. OBTW, we got no record of you being in the Army. And, then having 6 additional pages of acknowledged service connected disabilities be attached to the denial document. Yeah, tell my missing leg what didn't happen. Musta got the Agent Orange from a beer joint toilet seat, right? OH, and here's a punch line for ya. On resubmission for my disability, they requested me to provide them with an copy of their original denial letter. Their letter said that they had "misplaced their copy". Get where I'm coming from? The author's credence may have been blown...but, the way the documents are presented by his opponents cast a lot of doubt on theirs too. Looks like you have this guy dead to rights. Thanks for letting us know. There is a list out there, that supposedly lists every Green Beret in history. I mentioned to a friend about my daughters godfather who was a Sneaky Pete. I get a call from some guy telling me that my friend had never been a SF trooper. He had this list, and he informed me that my friend was a Wannabee. I got so p*ssed that I forgot to ask to see *his* bonafides. My friend has been acknowledged in several books in the dedication of numerous authors. He's got autographed, dedicated to him in the writing of the author, books where he is mentioned in the book itself. He was one of the few officers given a field commission in Vietnam. I've seen too many pictures of him with the yards, in uniform wearing a beret from 1966. (and him in that d**nable beach towel he used to wear like a sarong). I've seen his DD 214...and held the citation of his DSM. With accompanying orders. And, the citation and the orders were from MACV-SOG II Corps (it's been 40 years cut me some slack). And, I've known him since 1968. I talked to some of his friends at the 5thSF in Kontum and picked up a lot of dirt to pass on to his kids and his goddaughter (my kid,) So, I'm supposed to believe the first hack that says my friend is a liar? I don't think so, Harvey. Mistakes are made by the Army, the VA, and the NRC in St Louis. If the guy is lying for his pocket book. Then burn his a**. But, don't turn this into some public vendetta, and it sure looks like it to me, because you think your daddy was bigger&badder than his daddy. You make all of us look like a bunch of idiots to the civilian populace. The people here are getting ready to pull the same stuff on our current crop of Vets that they pulled on us. The "Jane Fondas" are ramping up. This time we are all home to take sides and stand up for the troops. But, stuff like this makes us all appear to be little children playing spoiled brat. I'm a nobody. Never went anywhere, never did nothing. I got no claim to being a hero...but, I've sure known a lot. Check out Jim Bondsteel. He was a friend of mine...and he never thought of himself as anyone extra special. Just a regular Joe...wonder what you would find on him if you did a FOIA with the NRC. Oh yeah, I didn't like this book that much. He's starting to write from a formula...takes all the fun out of it.

Mr Gary Linderer tells you how teamwork really pays off. He isn't one of these writers who can do everything himself, as some claim they can. The greatest glory and honor come from helping one another achieve the best of themselves.

Once again Gary Linderer has written an interesting, edge of your seat account of small unit contact during the United States' Vietnam involvement. The lively and exciting text depicts an ,as if you were there, account of small unit operations and the ability of which to overpower and frustrate the enemies' guerilla tactics. The firefights are intense and the action is compelling. This work is a must read for small unit action fans.

As always Gary has come up with another exiting book. And he started the book with the perfect story. A story about Jim Thayer a freind of mine that was in the same Company as I was. I have read all of Gary's books, and each one was more exiting then the other. Anyone who has not read his books are missing out on some great reading. i have met Gary, and I can truthfully say he is a no nonsence guy. Anything he writes you can bet it happened.RLTW Ray J Sonnier
