This is one of my favorite nursing texts. It is concise, organized, accurate, well-written, and up-to-date --unlike many of my other nursing texts (e.g., Kee's pharmacology). I actually enjoy reading it.
This is not a required text for me, but I would not do without it. I recommend it to anyone who wants to speed their understanding of pharmacology. --I have spent extra time pondering it as it has alerted me to errors in my required text(s). That's a good thing. I just wish those other texts weren't required and Lehne was. Best to learn the right data from the start. Lehne uses tables to present complex information from various angles. This helps to better and rapidly digest things like drug categories, therapeutic results, etc. Lehne uses more medical/scientific language and explanations compared to my other nursing texts. That's a plus to me, but others might not like it. My other books use simpler language (and/or definitions which clutter the writing and slow my reading) and omit background info (which I find helpful). I actually find Lehne simpler as he doesn't dance around the material. He just states it simply and directly and I get it. When the explanation is not there, as in my other texts, rote memorization is required. I am much better at remembering per an associated concept, so I like Lehne. Finally, I have found Lehne to be markedly more up-to-date than my other texts. For instance, I have 2008 and 2009 texts that describe drugs that the FDA removed from the market more than a decade ago. Lehne had already updated his info in his 2001 edition (and of course the 2006 edition). I have not found the typographical errors or sloppy writing in Lehne that I have found in other texts. I think overall, Lehne has a better writing and editing team.

Great resource,

This book is one of the best reads of all of my school books, simply because Lehne doesn't try to sound hyper-intelligent to impress. He keeps it simple, and interesting, and that definitely gives one the desire to continue reading. I have learned so much from this book already. One of my favorite school reads by far! This book will continue to be useful in my future studies. Worth every cent that was paid! LOVES IT!

Excellent Pharmacology Textbook,
By
This review is from: Pharmacology for Nursing Care, 6e (Hardcover)
This textbook does an excellent job in explaining the physiology, drug actions, adverse effects, etc. Students will have a good understanding of how drugs work after using this textbook. The physiology in this book is a plus. It explains very well receptors such as the adrenergic, cholinergic, and opiate receptors. All new drugs are included in this book. This book is a number one for all nursing and college level pharmacology courses.

Lehne has done an excellent job at making a potentially dry subject interesting and, at times, captivating. He is very talented at giving the "why" behind how drugs work and why they have side effects. However, this is not a book for laypeople. For it to be a truly good read one should have a comfort level with human anatomy and physiology - at the very least. Previous pathophysiology coursework would be preferable.
The book is set up in a very logical way. Lehne provides a helpful review of A&P fundamentals for a particular body system and then presents the medications that affect that system. The chapters are relatively short (many less than ten pages) and easy to digest. The writing style is easy to read and not overly technical. Also, there is not an excessive use of abbreviations which makes reading the book more like, well, reading a book and less like reading a textbook.

This book got me through pharmacology,

Pharm was definitely my hardest subject during nursing school. I had a hard time keeping all the drug classes straight, but this incredible textbook gave me the exact tools I needed to understand the drugs. With Lehne's sense of humor (in chapter 1 she writes a note to the "chemophobes" - those of us who are scared of chemistry class!) makes this text book interesting and easy to read.

Best Pharm Text,

This review is from: Pharmacology for Nursing Care, 6e (Hardcover)
I had another text for my pre-nursing pharmacology class, and after suffering through it, found this one. Even though I had already finished the class, I bought this and read it cover to cover. It's worth it. Not a lot of details on the chemistry, but it's great for the practicioner who needs the practical information. The background parts that discuss physiology and some chem are excellent to keep things in context.

All I have to say after couple of pharmacology classes (one for LPN program, one for LPN-RN program)this book beats both classes hands down. The information is given in such an easy manner, I don't know why more books are like this one. And unlike most "textbooks" this one is actually really enjoyable to read believe it or not. The author is the best I have seen in "textbook" format in a long time, plus the information is easy to understand. I would highly recommend this book even if you are not taking a Pharm class, this is a great reference book also, the first book I have had in a while I will NOT be selling it back to the bookstore!

I understand pharmacology!,

I am in nursing school and have now taken pharmacology. I was very scare of taking that class thinking it was going to be the end of me but due to this book I made it very well! This book is very easy to read and makes you want to read for leisure! I found it very easy to follow what the author was talking about and understand is topics. She uses interesting facts that help you remember the information and makes you want to read more. In each section she has prototype drugs which are the most common seen for that certain class. Over all great book! Anyone could read this who has had a high school education and understand what is going on. The CD is good for review for tests. Do not have a comment on the work book.

Good Pharm Text,
By SV "SV" (Bay Area, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pharmacology for Nursing Care, 6e (Hardcover)
This book is well written and includes thorough drug details. In Pharmacology some information will overlap or have reference to prior information in the text. For example, beta-blocker medication is mentioned for use in multiple system disorders, and in case you forgot how it works, it will give you a brief summary when mentioned instead of having to flip to the glossary and find where the text originally described the information.
