This new text offers complete, accurate information on dosage problems, pharmacological effects, medication administration, how to read and check prescriptions, and why certain medications are prescribed. Presented in a logical sequence starting with an introduction to pharmacology, it progresses through the steps of the medication process, including dosage calculation and medication administration. Body system icons highlight and reinforce which drugs are used for a specific body system. Enrichment elements such as Did You Know? boxes and critical thinking scenarios are included throughout. Numerous photos, illustrations, tables, and examples of drugs and equipment aid visual learning and recognition. Plus, patient education is also emphasized, a critical focus for today's health professional.
  • Combines math and medication skills in a worktext format for a unique approach to mastering key pharmacology theory and skills.
  • Follows the national curriculum and meets all AAMA and AMT standards for training in pharmacology for medical assisting programs.
  • Body system icons used with corresponding drug discussions show at a glance which drugs are used for which body systems.
  • Procedure boxes offer step-by-step instructions, many with photos, on how to administer medication.
  • Key Points throughout the text offer bulleted summations of important, previously learned material.
  • Competency Checklists spell out the individual steps required to complete a full range of medication administration procedures - an excellent measure for evaluating performance.
  • Patient Education for Compliance boxes emphasize important patient education concepts and information the health professional should know when instructing patients about their prescribed medications.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The second edition of Pharmacology: Principles and Applications is a thorough, comprehensive pharmacology text that is well suited for health professions students as a result of its extensive content and effective use of review questions, exercises, color, icons, and graphics to engage students for optimal learning. The text is divided in such a manner that health professions faculty can easily determine which sections of the text should be emphasized in a specific discipline.

The book contradicts itself a few times. The online quizes if you do them are a disaster full of errors.

2.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat of a mess in places, October 13, 2011

I do not have any other pharmacology texts to compare this to, but I find the thing to be most annoying with this text is that the authors will throw in a medical term or reference a disease, but not bother to explain what they mean. This is a frequent occurrence! This means you can either stop what you're reading to go look it up, or let it slide through your brain and hope that it wasn't very important. My most recent run in with this is the statement that vaccines are contraindicated in patients with diarrhea, vomiting, otitis... WTF is otitis???? Also, there seems to be unnecessary use of the apothecary system, which according to several people I know in the health care field (doctors, and nurses), is NEVER used these days. Why teach some outdated system? Next we'll have to learn to use a slide rule and an abacus. Geez!

Another reviewer mentioned that the online quizzes were horrible and full of errors. I do not have access to any sort of online supplement to this book, but I now suspect that my professor gets his test questions from there. Almost every single chapter quiz we've had so far has contained some question that is either flat-out wrong, or else worded in such an obscure and garbled way that you have no idea what answer they're looking for. I have fought for these lost points, and my professor has given me credit in almost every instance. This subject is not that hard, but it has quickly become my most hated class, and I'm also taking chemistry, physics, and nutrition.

Conclusion: Unless you have to purchase this book for a class, avoid it at all costs.
