Book Description

This highly acclaimed textbook is a worldwide bestseller, recognized for its emphasis on the mechanisms by which drugs act at the cellular and molecular levels and how that relates to their overall pharmacological effects and clinical uses. The 5th Edition includes four new chapters, a reorganized and expanded section on treatments for infections and cancer, and thorough updates throughout that explore new treatments and advances in molecular biology that may lead to future therapeutic options for cancer, HIV infection, osteoporosis, neurodegenerative disorders, erectile dysfunction, obesity, diabetes, atherosclerosis, cardiac failure, and more. User-friendly features include new chapter overviews · reviews of relevant physiology and biochemistry · boxed key points and clinical uses · references and reading lists · a new full-color art program · and new "small print" sections that separate the more complex material from the main discussion thread in each chapter, leaving the depth of coverage to the reader's discretion.

  • Reviews relevant physiological and biochemical processes at the beginning of most chapters to provide a framework for discussing the mechanisms and actions of drugs that affect those processes.
  • Discusses not only what drugs do, but also how they do it-the mechanisms of action at the cellular and molecular levels.
  • Places boxed key points throughout the text, offering readers at-a-glance access to essential knowledge.
  • Provides overviews of the therapeutic uses of different drug classes in "clinical uses" boxes throughout the text.
  • Offers brief coverage, where appropriate, of how certain pharmacological compounds are used to explore cellular and physiological functions outside the clinical setting.
  • Facilitates additional research with annotated references and suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter.

Features a full-color page design and art program, with completely redrawn diagrams and many new figures.
  • Begins each chapter with an "Overview" section that details the scope and order of topics to be covered.
  • Covers not only new agents, but also the advances in molecular biology that are driving further drug development, new treatments in the pipeline, and relevant regulatory controls.
  • Gives readers the option to explore selected topics in greater depth through "small print" sections that contain complex and sometimes speculative material that is complementary, but not essential to the main discussion thread in each chapter.
  • Includes four new chapters: an introductory chapter entitled What is Pharmacology? · two chapters on cellular processes that are affected by many of the drugs described later in the book, Excitation, Contraction, and Secretion and Cell Proliferation and Apoptosis · and a final chapter on Drug Discovery and Development.
  • Devotes more coverage to the drugs used to fight infectious agents, creating separate chapters for antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiprotozoal, and antihelminthic drugs as well as cancer chemotherapy in the newly retitled Drugs Used in the Treatment of Infections and Cancer section.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This is yet another classic book that has become a favourite with medical students across the UK. Rang et al provides such a solid basis for first and second year Pharmacology, that you are in some of the safest hands. With marvellous diagrams and "cramming" blue summary boxes, the layout is well thought out and very useful. This book is one of the best you will find. It's especially perfect for during revision.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best entry-level pharmacology textbook, May 18, 2000
By
This review is from: Pharmacology (Paperback)
Its strange that such an exciting subject as pharmacology is served by so many badly organised, boringly written and outdated textbooks. Rang + Dale is a refreshing antidote to this strange state of affairs. The first 8 chapters form a superb introduction to the subject - particularly because the authors don't skimp on the physiological details and concentrate on principles rather than endless catalogues of obscure drugs. This is a British textbook and thus uses British nomenclature, but the American equivalents are pointed out along the way, so American readers shouldn't be put off. The more advanced student will of course outgrow the material in this book, but I would strongly recommend this textbook for science undergrads, medical students, and anyone looking for a book to provide a solid foundation to their study of pharmacology.

This is a great textbook if you want as little detail as possible; it tells you exactly what you need to know and no more. The readings are short and easy. The best part about the textbook is the review boxes at the end of each section. The online access is also a plus because you are able to download and print the figures, which become useful study aids. I would definitely recommend this textbook. It should be supplemented with Pharmacology flashcards or charts, which is why it is only a four out of five stars.

This book is a GREAT reference. My only complaint is that it's not the most up-to-date.
