Very good study guide for passing the PTCB national certification exam,
By ephany77 (Georgia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Pharmacy Technician (Perfect Paperback)
I used this book along with the accompanying study guide (sold separately) to study for my PTCB national certification exam. The chapters are broken down in an easy to follow format, and are arranged in logical order. Important key terms are emphasized and there are self tests at the end of every chapter. The book addresses retail pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, extended care pharmacy and other avenues that a certified technician can follow.
Even though I've worked in retail pharmacy for over two years, there was A LOT of information in this book I'd never been exposed to. The hospital and extended care information alone made it well worth the investment. I passed my exam on the first try and I'm convinced it was because of this book and the accompanying workbook. I definitely recommend this book as a study guide for the PTCB exam.

Outstanding book! Follows a very logical format of presentation. It has frequent self-tests that provide feedback. It has summaries at the end of each chapter that encapsulate the most significant points. This book can work on it's own, but there is a companion workbook and review that provides an excellent accompaniement and further testing for exam preparation. Buy both!

The time had come for a mid-life career change, and I have settled upon pursuing a PharmD from scratch. Part of the plan was to get a part-time job in a pharmacy, while I complete my pre-requisites. Passing the PTCB's certification exam made perfect sense.
Since I have never worked in a pharmacy, I chose "The Pharmact Technician" and its workbook (sold separately)as my basis for study. After a solid two weeks of studying three or four hours a day, I took the exam and passed on the first try. I got an 840 out of 900, and the only weakness that I had was with some of the drugs. There were four questions I had to absolutely guess on. The book is logically layed out, making it easy to build upon the knowledge aquired in previous chapters. It includes a section on the "Top 200" drugs, and this is the hardest section because it is almost 100% memorization, unless you work in a pharmacy. I used all of the practice quizzes to make sure I had a solid understanding of the material. The workbook (sold separately) was invaluable by adding more quizzes and a couple of practice exams. I would highly recommend both books.

I'm studying for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam
because Texas requires this particular exam for me to be registered with the state board. I'm glad I'm using this book because it covers multiple topics that I didn't even realize might be needed in this field. It's easy to read, and each chapter has review questions in a Self Test that help me spot areas I need to study more. Plenty of illustrations and a format that keeps pertinent information on the same page as the visuals make it a smooth reading experience. I've also purchased the companion workbook to reinforce what I'm learning before taking the exam.

This is a thorough text of the Pharmacy Technician profession. The book covers the history of Pharmacy and the evolution of the profession.
The book is divided into possible employee settings of Pharmacy Technicians. Those would be Community/Retail/Ambulatory pharmacies, Hospital, Long Term Care, Hospice, and Insurance settings. There are the health science chapters as well. The chapters for beginning technicians of course being the Sigs, Algebraic math with metrics, and the top 200 drugs. What I liked most: -Key Concepts and Self tests at the end of each chapter. -The Appendices at the end of the text. These were helpful to me with the PTCB test. What could be improved: -The math. This text does have a companion Math text. -The chapters on the Physiology of pharmaceuticals. It gave a thumbnail sketch. It shows that there is no escaping having to take at least a year of college chemistry along with Anatomy&Physiology to advance in this field. -The Top 200 Drug list. It's hard to keep current as it is changing. Reading this text along with a class given by a Pharmacist helped me to pass the State and National exams.

I researched various study guides for a friend who was interested in preparing for the PTCB exam and this one looked like a winner. After receiving it, I went through it to review and I liked it a lot. Well written, comprehensive, and easy to understand. It has review summaries at the end of each chapter plus a short quiz. It covers everything that a tech needs to know before sitting for an exam. I've seen other prep and review books for technicians but this one is definitely one of the best! I was fortunate to have also received a companion workbook at no charge with this purchase that is very useful after completing the study guide (it usually sells separately for $30!). Overall, a great buy for preparing for the exam! Highly recommend!

Excellent Content but not reflective of entire test,

This review is from: The Pharmacy Technician (Perfect Paperback)
The content explored in this book is great. It thoroughly covers reading sigs, latin/greek prefixes and suffixes, Routes of administration and some good surface level basics on physiology.
I read this book only and passed the test. BUT, be warned there are quite a few things on the test that are not included in this book, and some of the stuff in this book is not covered on the test. If you're going to buy it make sure you know generic substitutes for brand name drugs and be aware of the possible interactions each could have with food. (ie no dairy with doxycycline) As far as the calculations and conversions go, this book is good.

The book is thorough, logical in sequence, and provides a good range of things one might get tested on, in more than one way. Excellent for those with no prior knowledge of the subject, and still interesting for those who do.

This book is very easy to use and navigate through, and seems to be an excellent resource for pharmacy technicians. It is lengthy and covers all types of practice settings. It is a great all-inclusive resource to have in the pharmacy.
