Broad-based and hands-on, Phase-Lock Basics, Second Edition is both easy to understand and easy to customize. The text can be used as a theoretical introduction for graduate students or, when used with MATLAB simulation software, the book becomes a virtual laboratory for working professionals who want to improve their understanding of the design process and apply it to the demands of specific situations. This second edition features a large body of new statistical data obtained from simulations and uses available experimental data for confirmation of the simulation results.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Mr. Egan is uniquely qualified to present this textbook course on PLLs... -- Microwaves & RF magazine, January 2008

From the Back Cover

A versatile and useful introduction to phase-locked loops—now in an updated edition

Phase-Lock Basics is a broad-based, hands-on text, designed to be both easy to understand and easy to customize. When used with MATLAB® simulation software, the book becomes a virtual laboratory for working professionals who want to improve their understanding of the design process and apply it to the demands of specific situations. The text can also be used as a theoretical introduction for graduate students. The description of second-order phase-locked loops is very thorough, covering all practical variations with formulas, graphs, worked examples, problem sets, and MATLAB® simulation exercises, which form a basis for understanding more complex loops. Features include:

  • Description of loop components, stability, responses, and performance in the presence of noise

  • MATLAB® simulation software and other design aids writtenexplicitly to correspond with the text

  • Access to an ftp site that corresponds with the textso that curves can be downloaded, duplicated, or modified

  • Scores of multicurve figures that illustrate various loop responses

  • A summary of acquisition formulas for second-order loops

  • Analysis and response curves for an important class of third-order loops

  • A four-page table of CW, AM, and FM signals in multiple representations

This Second Edition also includes new material on loop operation in noise, including a chapter on band-limited noise with MATLAB® scripts that enable the reader to duplicate and expand simulations. Phase-Lock Basics, Second Edition is an important reference for professional analog and digital circuit designers and also provides a complete and satisfying learning experience for graduate-level electrical engineering students.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good treatment of core subject, but difficult for beginner, July 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Phase-Lock Basics (Hardcover)
I am new to phase-lock loop design. Like most recent EE grads, I had one class in linear control systems, and some basic DSP classes, but thankfully that's enough to get started on PLL design.

I haven't finished Egan's book, but so far I think I can make some generalizations about his writing style. He redefines some 'common concepts' (like frequency) as "frequency + phase." You have to read carefully, otherwise you might miss his redefinition, and that will cause you confusion for the rest of the book. I don't like how he simply writes down formulas without any kind of symbol explanation. He explains the formulas well, but a simple 'w_c = carrier frequency component, f_m = modulation frequency component' alongside the formulas would really help. Symbols are re-used quite often, so one variable may change meaning from one page to the next...This means you can't just skip around the book without carefully reading the accompanying text passages.

These minor annoyances aside, the content is excellent. He spends a little time covering "basic material", for example bode-plots, root-locus, nyquist plots, and shows how these basic tools can aide a qualitative understanding of PLL steady-state stability. (Everything is cast as a second-order system, which is easy to hand-decompose.) This is important, because once you read about the non-linear regions of PLL behavior, it's easy to get lost in the math.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book, May 11, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Phase-Lock Basics (Hardcover)
This is my favorite book on phase locked loops in my entire library. It is an excellent book for actually learning phase locked loops from the ground up.

I have been involved in PLL design for four years. Reading through this book last year provoked a series of, "Aha!" moments and "That's an excellent way to phrase that," comments.

Egan has the knack of taking concepts which should be familiar to anyone with a degree in electrical engineering, and extending them easily to the very specific study of phase locked loop systems. His writing is clear and straight forward, and his analogies and examples are well chosen.

And happily, he does NOT make use of the age-old (and incomprehensibly useless to most of us) mechanical damping or servo systems.

This should be the first book on PLLs you read. Then you can move on to Rohde, et al.
