Editorial Reviews

Superstar comedienne Mo'Nique is "hilarious" (San Francisco Chronicle) as a sassy, plus-sized fashion designer who's tired of taking no for an answer in this "delightful" (Boston Globe) comedy about living life to the fullest. Jazmin Biltmore (Mo'Nique) has big plans for large ladies ? she's designed a sexy line of clothes for curvaceous women like herself. But when she can't get funding for her designs or meet a man who appreciates her unique physique, Jazmin's patience starts running thin. That is, until she wins an all-expense-paid trip to a resort in Palms Springs, where she just might just meet the man of her dreams.

4.0 out of 5 stars Uplifting and Funny April 18, 2006
By Rosa
I have to be honest when I first heard of this movie. My first thought was another bad movie like the Cookout. To my pleasant surprise It was really good. It has a positive message which will appeal to anyone. Monique plays a salesperson trying create a clothing line for plus-size women while battling the prejudice that she meets from others as well as accepting who she is. A movie about self-esteem,self-improvement, self-awareness. I would recommended this to anyone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun for everyone March 23, 2007
Phat Girlz proves that being big can also be beautiful in this entertaining, heartfelt comedy staring Mo'Nique as an aspiring fashion designer. Fed up with the mumu-style clothing in popular stores Jazmine decides to come up with her own clothing line. Her boss and her own self-doubt prove to be her biggest hurdle.

It was nice to see a film with actresses who are not anorexic and who are self-confidant regardless of their looks. Too often a woman is valued only for her physical appearance. I thought all three actresses were attractive, funny, and did an excellent job. One bugaboo: I would've liked to see her cousin develop a bit more empathy. The fact that she stood aside while Jaz took abuse rankled with this reviewer a bit.

I felt the male actors were all handsome and endearing. 4 stars. Entertaining and fun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fat is back August 22, 2006
I shared this movie with my tiny daughter and a group of friends. I was seeking a message of acceptance but got much much more. It is a great dramatic comedy with a great message, a lesson in culture and a romance. It is a good movie for women in search of acceptance (all of us) and for those who put others down because of their differences (all of us).

4.0 out of 5 stars Monique Strikes At Skinny Women Yet Again!!!!!!!!! October 1, 2006
Monique strikes at THIN america again with this hilarious but uplifting movie PHAT GIRLZ. Even though I am not a big girl, I can emphathize because I have a very large butt and to most thin girls that is also considered BIG and finding my jeans is a NIGHTMARE. In this movie, Monique fights her demons and tries every diet in the world to make her feel happy about herself. She flashes back to her fat childhood into her adult years. She wins a trip to Palm Springs and there she meets an African man who calls her a Thick Madam and says he loves her size. Monique finds herself and learns to love her bigness in it's entirety and even starts a clothing line called Thick Madam for all the other plus-sized women who went through what she went through. This was a very heart-warming love story. You have got to watch it. I'm a THICK MADAM!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not what you think! August 25, 2006
This is a very positive and uplifting movie.....and funny too! If you had second thoughts about seeing in the the theater - this is your chance to see it. You won't be disappointed.

If you have an adversion to fat or to people who DO NOT wear a size double 00, then this is NOT your kind of movie.

Go Mo'Nique!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars She's a brick house November 24, 2006
Jazmin Biltmore's really "built"

A healthy, smart brick house

She feels that since she's overweight

She'll never find a spouse

She's into popping diet pills

To get down to size 6

But that's a feat for David Blaine,

And other guys with tricks

One day she wins a holiday

And heads off to Palm Springs

And never in her wildest dreams

Does she guess what this brings

She meets a man who really likes

That she's built like a dam

And although he's Nigerian

This is no money scam

She and her friend soon realize

That bigger can be better

She learns to love her curvy self

And not let folk upset her

This really gives her confidence

Her inner dream to voice

And soon she finds that she's the one

To give phat girlz a choice

A comedy with good intent

It's funny and it's smart

You'll learn that size don't matter

in the matters of the heart

I found the film thoroughly entertaining. Phat Girlz is in many ways similar to Queen Latifah's film LAST HOLIDAY, that had hit the theaters the same year. Both star plus size women as department store clerks with an ambition to be more. In Last Holiday, Latifah wishes to be a master chef. In Phat Girlz, Monique wishes to create high fashion for big girls so that they'll feel more attractive. While Last Holiday had a big enough budget to film in Prague, Monique has to settle for Palm Springs. And in doing so, comes out with the better film. Both films are comic fantasies that provide vicarious thrills for their (assumed) big female audiences. But while Latifah's stunts like skiing and skydiving are visceral adventure, Monique goes through the motions of falling in love--with a man, then herself, then ourselves. The depth of emotion that Mo'nique displays was truly genuine.

Yes, some of the comedy is broad; the video cinematography is unsettling almost like they used different types of cameras. Maybe they could have invested a little more. The character development for the supporting players was close to nonexistent. But Monique delivers a film that speaks directly to her fans. Filmmaker Nnegest Likké provides counterpoint to the proceedings. The Nigerian doctor is seriously interested in a big girl like Monique because in his culture size is a reflection of wealth. He's intelligent, handsome and even challenges Mo's liberal use of the "B" word. The dialogue between the two doctors over who winds up with slender Mia is hilarious.

The reality is there are fat people in the world and I guess the writers and Monique just want there place in the world without being hated and mocked all the time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad Movie
This movie was, poorly written and the actors were ghetto and trashy. They give a bad name to African American women. Sorry I watched it. Don't waste your money or time.
