Book Description

August 17, 1999
Among the most important of all bird groups, pheasants account for the most abundant domesticated species (the domestic fowl), the most extensively hunted upland game bird (the common pheasant), and some of the most spectacularly beautiful of all large birds (the giant argus). This lavishly illustrated volume gives up-to-date information on the distribution, status, and biology of all 49 species, with special attention paid to those that are vulnerable, rare, or threatened. Including range maps and identification keys, The Pheasants of the World is a comprehensive reference not only for ornithologists and conservationists seeking to ensure the survival of the group, but also for aviculturists and others who want to better understand the nature of these splendid birds.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The exquisite watercolors of Major Henry Jones, housed since 1921 in the Zoological Society of London, provided the impetus for the publication of this scholarly volume on pheasant biology. Renowned ornithologist Johnsgard updates the literature on pheasants by emphasizing their ecology and breeding biology. Introducing the study is a summary of recent literature on classification, distribution, growth and development, ecology, reproduction, and aviculture. There follow detailed and comprehensive biological data for all 49 pheasant species and several subspecies. Numerous maps, line drawings, and 53 color plates which celebrate the brilliance and subtlety of the pheasant plumage complete this handsome volume. For students and professionals in ornithology and related disciplines. Laurie Bartolini, formerly with Lincoln Lib., Springfield, Ill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pheasants of the World, September 21, 2005

This review is from: The Pheasants of the World: Biology and Natural History (Hardcover)
An excellent book. Tends to focus more on the individual pheasant breeds rather than thier care and raising of them. However, probably one of the most in-depth books on the many beautiful species of pheasants worldwide.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!, July 16, 2009
This review is from: The Pheasants of the World: Biology and Natural History (Hardcover)
Excellent detail on many breeds of pheasant. Tells of their origins, species relations, possible hybrids in the wild and a chart of possible hydrids in captivity. Not a good book to learn of the special perks to raising these birds but still great on knowledge of where they came from.

Very good book with detailed and updated information regarding biology and status of each species comprised in this group of birds. Also some interesting prints from Elliot's Monograph plus a good number of photos and interesting drawings by the author.
