5.0 out of 5 stars A great release, even if I have a few objections.
So, Finally it's here, the 5th official live video release from Phil's 6th worldtour as a solo artist (previous releases count the Passadena 1982 video, the Dallas 1985 video, the Berlin 1990 video/2DVD, and the Paris 1997 video/DVD). 3.0 out of 5 stars Bad Audio
Love Phil Collins but the sound that was captured on the DVDs was very poor quality. Kept going up and down. Other than that, GREAT show.

This review is from: Phil Collins: Finally - The First Farewell Tour (DVD)
So, Finally it's here, the 5th official live video release from Phil's 6th worldtour as a solo artist (previous releases count the Passadena 1982 video, the Dallas 1985 video, the Berlin 1990 video/2DVD, and the Paris 1997 video/DVD). As such, one cannot quite keep from comparing this release to these former releases, when one wants to make an evaluation of the DVD. This being said, I shall emphasize that if your relatively new into Phil's music, or simply haven't bought the older releases for one reason or another, this is an excellent show, featuring a wide range of his greatest and best loved hits, and giving a very fine overview of how Phil is on stage. Furthermore, you'll have a large amount of extra features thrown in as an added value.

- THE TRACK LISTING -

Perhaps the greatest pro of this release is, that it features the FULL concert. A full 24 tracks are we treated with, which can only be described as generous. The only other complete release so far was the 1990 Serious Hits In Berlin (re-released in 2xDVD last year), and it is always a great frustration to the fans, when one of their favorite songs are cut away in the editing.

Furthermore, the set-list of this tour is quite well-balanced, featuring practically all the greatest, old as well as new - In The Air Tonight, Susudio, One More Night, Dance Into The Light, Another Day In Paradise, Can't Hurry Love, Can't Stop Loving You, and I could go on and on. Of course, a few tracks that I'd love to have seen here are missing - not one track from the Both Sides album - according to Phil his best, and I agree - is included, the title track would have fitted in perfectly; his most recent hit-single from the Brother Bear soundtrack, Look Through My Eyes, is omitted, this soundtrack being represented instead by the ballad No Way Out - which is in fact not a bad treat. I should have loved to have had the piano version of Do You Remember?, as performed on the '97 tour, but of course the line has to be drawn somewhere.

Instead, we are treated with several very pleasant surprises: An absolutely amazing gospel-version of True Colours, far superior to his '98 remake; a lovely version of Come With Me from his recent Testify album, again drawing on his amazing 5-piece of back-up vocalists; an impressive rendition of the gospel-like No Way Out, again using the full power of this vocal potential; and nearly last but not least, another track from the Testify album, It's Not Too Late, another of my favorites, and again presented in a wonderfull new version.

- THE PERFORMANCE -

The performance is, overall, great without being superb. Phil is in good vocal shape, but not as amazing as on the Live And Loose In Paris release from '97. The musicians play amazing, and overall this will probably rank second - after the 97 Paris concert, that was probably Phil's best ever - amongst his live releases. The arrangement is excellent, the upbeat songs are perfomed spotlessly, and the real power of the shw comes with the amazing vocal arrangement on several of the ballads, as mentioned above - True Colours, Come With Me, No Way Out and It's Not Too Late.

Generally, the on-scene performance is pretty dynamic and goes well along with the music - still, the scene doesn't quite give the same space for playing and entertainment as did the circular in-the-round stage used on the '97 tour. The lighting is ok, but I was not impressed - again, comparing with the amazing work on the '97 show, this was a minor let-down.

- SOUND AND FILMING -

The sound is virtually perfect, at least I can't find anything to complain on here. The sound of the music is much more pleasant than on the Berlin '90 show, which was perhaps the greatest weeknes of that show in my oppinion. The filming is excellent as well, the picture quality is great, and I don't miss the multi-camera angles option, which is even included on a few tracks.

- EXTRA FEATURES -

All the videos for the featured songs are included - a generous treat for the fans. Ok, most of the videos are quite mediocre, but still, Phil could've released a seperate video-DVD and ripped the fans of another 20 £. Of course, this is no guarantee that such a release will not come, as the videos of songs not played in the concert are not included. Of course, that should've been nice ... we're talking another 5 or 10 videos here I think.

Some old live-footage is included here, but frankly, this is nothing to go for. The Live Aid Against All Odds performance and the Secret Policeman's Ball In The Air Tonight performance are both in pretty lousy quality, mainly of interest for the serious fans. The 'wild card' features a 20-minutes performance with the Big Band, which never was my taste, so I can hardly appreciate this piece. Instead, there are loads of rare footage not included, that would've been obvious to include: The fantastic Policeman's Ball performance of The Roof Is Leaking, the very rare 1997 performance of The Same Moon with Laura Pausini (not sure whether this was a radio or TV show, this might not have been filmed), the 2002 TV performance of Wake Up Call, and I could go on. Perhaps one day, on future releases, these gems will se the light of day.

Still, these features, and also several documentaries, TV-specials and a gallery, are much more that what've been included on earlier releases, and with a full 224 minutes of extra material (yes, that's nealy 4 hours!), and a 133 minutes live-show, this can only be described as an extremely generous release, and defenitely woth bying, die-hard fan or newcommer.

Overall Rating: 9/10

4.0 out of 5 stars I don't care if Phil's not cool - I love this stuff, February 15, 2005
This review is from: Phil Collins: Finally - The First Farewell Tour (DVD)
I've been a diehard Genesis fan from the old days. Love Peter for Peter, but Phil pulled the band together as a unit far more effectively until "Genesis", as far as I'm concerned. The pop approach suited him much better than the pensive, romantic style of Mike and Tony, who sounded like a string quartet playing Depeche Mode once the latter day stuff came out. I love both their voices.

While my tastes do not lean toward peppy pop, when I listen to this music with some years in between this and my Lamb/Wind and Wuthering heyday, I realize that this is just darned fine pop. he works his butt off, the music is full of hooks and high-points, some silliness, but it is Pop Art, and it makes me happy. Would I like a reunion of prog-era Genesis? Absolutely. but for what it is, this is a great show, full of love and effort and world-class playing. And, though it may not matter to some, there is an all-too-brief nuclear drum solo, the only one (save for an obscure Brand X CD, Live at the Roxy) on legitimate record by Phil, which contrasts with the more conventional fireworks of the wonderful Chester Thompson, followed by an astounding drum duo and trio with master percussionist Luis Conte. Phil's solo and the percussion ensemble are pieces of music, not gymnastics, complete with fancy tricks and crowd pleasers, but as close to a drum "song" as you're likely to find in the mainstream.

So liking Phil ain't cool. Tough. This is one of the hardest working, crowd-pleasing, laugh-at-yourself and have a good time, heart on his sleeve performers out there. And the DVD offers enough goodies to make for a great farewell gift for his fans.

So it's not "deep" - but it is fun pop artistry. Just enjoy it. There's plenty of serious progressive music out there to go around. What's so bad about a simple song with a groove, played at a world class level? Nuff said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Collins DVD is FABULOUS, August 12, 2005
This review is from: Phil Collins: Finally - The First Farewell Tour (DVD)
It is sometimes hard for me to be objective when it comes to my favourite singer Phil Collins, but I must say that the quality of this DVD is FABULOUS! The audio is great and the video is clear and colourful. The selection options are impressive and exciting, which include music videos that I have never seen! I love seeing Phil in his last concert tour (one of which I could not see in person), so this is a very emotional concert to watch. I love how he speaks to the audience in French, which shows he makes an effort to make the audience before him feel right at home! OK, enough about Phil, tears are beginning to fall! Thank you, Amazon, for bringing Phil into my home. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Phil has done it again!, February 10, 2005
This review is from: Phil Collins: Finally - The First Farewell Tour (DVD)
I saw Phil on this tour in Orlando, he was outstanding then, and this DVD shows the true experience of his First Farewell Tour. Its hard to imagine a world without Phil Collins, but this DVD will provide a lasting experience of a lifetime

5.0 out of 5 stars phil collins - serious hits-seriously great!, October 2, 2005
This review is from: Phil Collins: Finally - The First Farewell Tour (DVD)
listening to anything by phil collins - with or without genesis-takes me back to a great time in my life! This DVD is just what I needed to copmplete my extensive collection. The music wis great, but all the behind scenes extras are invaluable. May this not be a farewell, but a new phase in this extremely talented man's career.

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST music-concert DVD that has ever been made!, February 19, 2005
This review is from: Phil Collins: Finally - The First Farewell Tour (DVD)
I would give Phil's newest dual-disc DVD ten stars if I could. The concert is amazing and begins with ten minutes of pure DRUMS! The setlist is incredible, but Phil has so many wonderful songs that this concert (recorded in Paris, back in June of '04) could've been--should've been--four hours long, in an effort to get in every good song, but two hours and fifteen minutes isn't too bad. If Phil's voice and physical energy would've held out, he and his awesome band could've performed 40-50 songs and nobody in that Paris audience would've batted an eye.
Two times during the concert Phil announced that this tour (2003-2004) will unfortunately be the last one and he received mixed reactions from the audience--cheering and booing.
For the past nearly forty years, Phil has worked hard in the music business (by himself, with Genesis and with "Brand X", along with his Big Band era), so he deserves to be able to retire while still at the top of his success. Besides, back in December, his (third) wife Orianne gave him a new son, so the current generation of his family has become more important to him than fame and fortune.

This new dual-disc DVD also offers incredible bonus material, including music videos.

If you love Phil Collins, do not hesitate any longer--get a copy of this DVD! I got mine yesterday at the nearest Barnes & Noble.
"Finally...The First Farewell" is an experience to be cherished and is a DVD that is worth every cent of its purchase price.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BUT NEEDS MORE, November 23, 2006
This review is from: Phil Collins: Finally - The First Farewell Tour (DVD)
First off, you should buy this DVD. There's no bigger Collins fan than I, so I may be a little more critical than the average fan. The drum solo to start the show is worth the price of the DVD alone- it will give you goose bumps. The show is great- sound quality, direction, and length. My only complaint is the lack of older Collins tunes. We've all heard the same songs live on other cd's and DVD's, so why not include some others like: I Don't Care Anymore, It Don't Matter To Me, Inside Out, Everyday, or something from the Face Value album besides In The Air Tonight? I'm tired of seeing/hearing the same 15 super-commercial songs on all the live albums/dvd's. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST BUY & A GREAT BARGAIN, February 1, 2005

This review is from: Phil Collins: Finally - The First Farewell Tour (DVD)
I own about 10 concert DVD's and this one is by far the best! I pre-ordered this one a month ago and received it 2 days after the release last week (great service amazon!). I have always liked Phil's music but I never realized how talented a vocalist and a musician he was until I watched this concert. Phil, the band, the backup singers and the horn section all have great showmanship--you can see they had a great time playing this concert. Showmanship + musicianship + great music = awesome concert. I have not yet found another DVD that includes 24 top 20 hits performed live plus the MTV videos to go with most of the hits. All for $20! Plus a documentary about the tour that is well done. That's alot of bang for your buck. ONLY ONE BIT OF CRITICISM: for some reason I cannot get the DVD to pause on my Sony DVD player. I've never had this problem with any other DVD. Has anybody else had this problem?

5.0 out of 5 stars the best concert dvd i have seen, November 23, 2006
By
This review is from: Phil Collins: Finally - The First Farewell Tour (DVD)
ok i'll admit i haven't seen "live and loose in paris" - the one that everyone else is harping about. but in my humble opinion, this is the best live concert dvd that has ever been released. i'm an audio engineer by profession and i found the sound on this dvd to be phenomenal. not great, not outstanding, but unbelievable. the production is marvelous, as is the performance by mr. collins and his band. if you've ever read a review by an unkown person and acted on it, take my advice and buy this dvd right now! there's no way in hell you won't enjoy it, not if you love phil collins, not if you love a good concert, not if you love good music.
cheers
