UK two CD collection from the British producer and remixer containing 25 sought-after classic '80s remixes and rarities. With a CV resembling a 'Who's Who' of the music industry, Phil Harding's career spans over 30 years... from recording The Clash in the '70s, remixing and producing top Club/Dance and Pop acts in the '80s and '90s, to recently working with Lamont Dozier in L.A. In the 80s, working out of a basement studio in the Pete Waterman-owned PWL studio complex (with production partner Ian Curnow), Phil Harding club mixes and productions dominated the dancefloors and club charts on an international scale. Includes tracks from Michael Jackson, ABC, Rick Astley, Godley & Creme and many others. Cherry Pop.

Phil Harding is most often linked to remixes of dozens of Stock Aitken Waterman productions. A few of those productions are here, but a large number of these mixes are strictly focused on the fact that Phil Harding remixed them, so they are not all SAW productions. That also means not all of them have that Hi-NRG sound--some are actually downtempo. What you do get is plenty of 12" mixes that have never been on CD before. Therefore, there's a glaring inclusion of the murder mix of Dead or Alive -it has been on DOZENS of compilations. But, it is indeed one of Harding's shining moments, so it really had to be featured here.

Really though, the other rarities are the reason to get this disc. New versions of classics by Diana Ross, The Jackson 5, and the Four Tops are big highlights, as are the numerous unreleased Rick Astley tracks. Harding's mix of the hugely popular Never Gonna Give You Up is something I was thrilled about, but actually, it's not all that impressive a mix--I expected it to have a harder sound, but it's actually softer than the hit mixes. The other unreleased astley songs are fun, but they all sound mostly like demos--both the musical arrangement and Astley's voice. If you ARE looking for that SAW sound and hi-nrg tracks, there are plenty of them on disc 2, my favorites being Oxygen, I Need More (the vocals sound like a cross between Pete Burns and Divine), and The Upstroke. Top quality remastering from original studio tapes with a booklet packed with detailed sleeve notes including new research, Phil Harding mix commentary and interviews ... In addition to an in-depth brand new interview with Phil Harding and Ian Curnow together on 'the making of' these tracks (and beyond), there are interviews with 10 other artists/industry personnel involved with these tracks back-in-the-day.

The CD is a tie-in release with Harding's recent 600-page book 'PWL From The Factory Floor', the inside story of PWL Studios in London, UK, who had a vast array of hits for other artists such as KYLIE MINOGUE, PET SHOP BOYS, DONNA SUMMER, BANANARAMA, ERASURE, GARY MOORE, CHIC and MEL & KIM - as well as working with unknown industry newcomer SIMON COWELL.

The book explains what went on behind-the-scenes at the 24/7 studio and has sections on working with well-known artists, in-depth interviews, commentaries on classic mixes and a technical section with something for everyone - including how to mix a Number 1 hit and revealing some of the techniques and wizardry of working in the record industry.

This is AWESOME!! :) I've been looking for some of these tracks FOREVER, and could either not find them or only get them on vinyl! The sound quailty is great and the track selections are fantastic! A great slice of 80's dance music - plus some rare Rick Astley unreleased tracks as a bonus! Now when will we be getting a second compilation or something from other PWL remixers?? By the way, I know there is a companion book to this, but the liner notes are realy fasinating!... even though you need a magnifying glass to read them! Could the font be any smaller?!...
