A powerful coverage any auto buff must have,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Phil Hill: A Driving Life (Hardcover)
Phil Hill: A Driving Life packs in photos by John Lamm and tells of Phil Hill, who won multiple sports-car victories and was qualified to evaluate nearly any kind of vehicle. 26 articles originally appeared in Road & Track Magazine and offer his descriptions of what it was like to drive some of the most amazing cars ever built. Auto history blends with experience in a powerful coverage any auto buff must have.

Another superb compilation from Hill and Lamm,

Another great collection of "Salon" articles from "Road & Track". Even though I own all of the magazines that these articles first appeared in, I still found this book to be a worthwhile buy just to have them all together in one place. And along with car reviews, there are also articles with Phil's reminiscences of Juan Fangio, Stirling Moss, Jim Hall, Olivier Gendebien and Dan Gurney.
Two small caveats: in my copy, pages 69 and 70 are repeated. (Oddly, the text on the duplicate page 69 is slightly different from the original.) As nothing is missing, this is a minor point. And if you're expecting Ferraris, you'll have to go to the companion volume "A Champion's View" for those. The only Ferrari here is a 1960 246S Dino found in an article comparing it with its Targa Florio rival, the Porsche RS60. Oh, yeah, and this is a big, heavy book! I had the pleasure of meeting Phil in the mid-80s when the Great American Race, in which he was competing, made an overnight stop in Philadelphia, where I was living at the time. This book is a fitting memorial to a great man and a great racer.

This is a phenominal book! My husband is a race car driver, as well and being very versed in racing history and Phil Hill is a must for anyone's library. Although I do love the sport of car racing, I don't really read much on it, but I read this book and could not put it down. I encourage the racer and non-racer to get this one!

For a relatively expensive book, I expect the book to arrive in perfect condition. However, the dust jacket has a large crease in it. This was a present for my husband and I am not happy about the appearance.

Phil Hill was our favorite motor sports hero. Coupled with his motor sports success is his ability to explain the histoical importance of the cars he reviewed for Road and Track. His mechanical sympathy for the cars he drove is coupled with the ability to explain the workings and importance of the mechanics of the cars. This is a compilation of articles from Road and Track, richly photographed by the author and a must read for any motorsports fan.
