Book Description

September 4, 2008
Knoppix is an astoundingly clever product. It runs Linux completely from CD. There is no need to install. It bypasses all the software already installed on your PC or laptop. It automatically detects the hardware in your computer, such as video card, sound card, networking, the lot (subject to suitable hardware). When you've finished using Knoppix, simply restart. Your computer will return to your regular system, and it will behave as if nothing has happened. Knoppix is Free Software and open source under the terms of the GNU General Public Licence (GPL). Knowing Knoppix is a beginner-friendly book designed to help with these situations: You can't start Windows! Disaster? Possibly not. It is often possible to rescue files from crashed Windows computers, even when Windows cannot be started. This guide takes you step by step through the process. You are curious about Linux, and you want to discover what all the fuss is about.

4.0 out of 5 stars Knowing Knoppix rocks!, October 2, 2008
This review is from: Phil Jones - Knowing Knoppix: The Beginner's Guide To Linux That Runs From Cd (Paperback)
I liked it! I found this article from Mr. Tiglao very appropriate so I post it here as the review:

Knowing Knoppix it's a pretty short book, stuffed with step-by-step guides with colorful illustrations about a clever product that can run a Linux on your PC or laptop in a single CD - with no installation. Yes, a Linux system with the full graphical desktop environment, networking and sound - with no installation necessary.

How Knoppix really works anyway? Simply insert the Knoppix CD and off you go, with an instant Linux system. Knoppix leaves your existing software untouched. In fact, Knoppix can run on a computer with no hard disk at all! After running Knoppix, simply take the CD out of the drive. The computer will behave as if nothing has happened.

The general philosophy of Knoppix is to access disks in read-only mode as much as possible. This is ideal for beginners, because it protects against accidents.

This book is designed to help you run Linux for the very first time. As you will see, Knoppix is perfect for Linux newcomers. Linux isn't going away any time soon. That is why learning it is an investment in your time that will pay off for years to come.

This book is meant for people who are at least reasonably familiar with computers. For example, it is assumed that you know your way around your computer's mouse, keyboard, CD drive, and so on.

Thats's it. Read this fine book, and dip your feed in the world of Linux.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on an excellent software, December 5, 2009
This review is from: Phil Jones - Knowing Knoppix: The Beginner's Guide To Linux That Runs From Cd (Paperback)
I met the inventor of Knoppix a few years ago in a conference in Europe. He was a very nice and approachable guy.
He also gave me my first CD on Knoppix. That prompted me to try it on my way back home. I didn't have much success at the first try. So I searched amazon for a book that could help me. I found this beginner's book and it proved to be very helpful. It is easy to read and follow. It covers much of the topics that are needed when one is starting to learn the Knoppix system.

I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really good book on Knoppix, November 30, 2009
This review is from: Phil Jones - Knowing Knoppix: The Beginner's Guide To Linux That Runs From Cd (Paperback)
This book really helped me in starting to learn Knoppix. First, I was hesitant to use this so-called
Linux on CD which can be run entirely from one CD. But this book guided me all the way through the
process. I highly recommend this book
