Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of the 1980 debut album from the Power Pop singer, songwriter and musician, best known for his work with the Dwight Twilley Band. The original album is now joined by 10 bonus tracks on this special release. When the Twilley Band petered out, Seymour gathered enough material to snag his own label deal, this time with his name out front. The album's first single, 'Precious To Me', landed in the Top 25 at the beginning of 1981, and it is a snappy delight. The lighthearted music is serious stuff crafted from the bubblegum school, but with an edge and without all the angst Nick Lowe would inject. 'Baby It's You' isn't the Shirelles/Beatles song, but rather a driving, jangly statement of immediate love from Seymour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Precious to All March 22, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The tragic solo career of Phil Seymour yielded a pair of solid power pop albums, a gem of a single, "Precious to Me," and a reminder of what he brought to the original Dwight Twilley Band. This expanded and remastered version of his solo debut spells it out in pretty much as pure power pop style as it gets. Released in 1980 on the ill-fated Boardwalk Records (Neil Bogart's resurgence after losing Casablanca and also home to Joan Jett's resurrection) before the label collapsed in 1985, leaving Phil's second album to die on the vine. There's no denying, however, that this album was his turn to shine, and he gave it his all.

It's not like his old mates wandered off on him. Twilley contributes two songs, old bandmate Bill Pitcock drops one in as well. This reissue pumps up the bonus tracks, adding a remake of "Twilley Don't Mind's'" "Looking For The Magic" along with 8 demo mixes. But it is the original album that still sparkles. The remake of Bobby Fuller's "Let Her Dance" should have been a hit, along with a pumped up original called "Baby It's You." Add a pretty cool Elvis take on the King's "Trying To Get To You," and you'll get the old feel that "Sincerely" had in the 70's. As fans are likely to remember, The Dwight Twilley Band did their best to bridge The Bealtes' love of American Music via Liverpool by taking it back to the Sun Studio Sound.

On this, his best solo effort, Seymour pulls it off. Now that both his albums are back in print (including a great remix job on "Phil Seymour 2"), you need these both.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pop / rock classic October 9, 2012
Format:Audio CD
And rumors abound that more unissued Phil Seymour music is on the way including tracks with 20/20, Chris Spedding, Phil's own band - The Feel. And more including a proper release for the legendary 1979 Hong Kong Cafe gig.

Hopefully the Phil & the Textones version of Have I The Right will be issued at long last!

Also of note: the Mark Kleiner Power Trio version of Baby It's You. And there's a Scandinavian band who had a hit with Precious To Me. Check youtube.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Phil! March 17, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I have been a Phil fan for a long time and have to say that the Archive series is essential. If you love Phil, you'll love this series of releases. This isn't a release by some corporation trying to squeeze a buck out of the consumer. This release is due to the effort of the same management that was guiding Phil's career when this album was first recorded back in the 80's. The same person that put the hard work into Phil's career is now releasing these archives for Phil and for us. The archives are held to the highest standard with Phil's legacy coming first by someone who's vital input helped Phil become the solo artist that he needed to be. This is friendship, love and a devotion to music that is rarely seen. Thank you Saul Davis.

In my opinion, if Phil's Archive I and II aren't in your powerpop collection, you don't have one.
