Editorial Reviews

Made in 1983, 'Da Doo Ron Ron' is an engrossing feature-length documentary chronicling Phil Spector's fascinating career in popular music. It begins with his first hit - as a member of The Teddy Bears, when their smash hit, 'To Know Him Is To Love Him', topped the U.S. charts in 1958. From there it then traces chronologically his music career - from his early productions for the Atlantic label, his heyday days in the Sixties when he introduced the world to his ground-breaking 'Wall Of Sound' on his own Philles label, through to his comeback in the Seventies and the re-launch of his record label. Spector's story is told in a series of fascinating, in-depth interviews with those he knew and worked with over the years, several of whom bring up the darker and ruthless side of his character. They include composers Jerry Leiber & Mike Stoller and Jeff Barry , business associates and fellow producers such as Atlantic Records boss Ahmet Ertegun, his former business partner Lester Sill, Sonny Bono, Nino Tempo and 'Bumps' Blackwell, as well as the controversial writer/critic Albert Goldmann. Elsewhere, musicians, engineers and the artists themselves, such as Darlene Love of The Crystals, former wife Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes and The Ramones, recall their experiences, sometimes harrowing, with Spector, both inside and outside the recording studios. These compelling interviews are interspersed throughout with prime examples of Spector's glorious 'Wall of Sound' music - what he called "little symphonies for the kids". They include marvelous footage of The Ronettes, Crystals, The Righteous Brothers and The Ramones performing their hits on TV shows of the time and on film.

This 1983 documentary interviews many of Phil Spector's mentors, sidemen and professional associates, and is eerily prophetic as several describe his erratic behavior and gun-obsession. Before he became a convicted killer, Spector was a great pop producer, but was never anything less than a ruthless, greedy businessman who exploited his artists mercilessly, as Darlene Love, among others, attests. There is a delightful little interlude with Ms. Love lip-synching to her classic Spector Xmas recording of "White Christmas" as she walks along a California beach, among other diverting moments. The interviews with the Ramones, all of whom seem to have detested working with Spector, are classics. However, the color was terribly over-saturated and overall picture quality was not good; this cries out for a professional digital remastering, hence three stars instead of four.

Great to have this 1980s documentary available on DVD. This is the complete European release not the cut down US version aired on PBS back in the day under the title, Rock N Rollin' with Phil Spector. Some people have criticized the video quality. It's about the best you can expect as the documentary appears have been shot on 16mm film, which was fine for TVs in those days. The use of staged sequences made some of the hits , like for He's A Rebel" seem like music videos.

This is the story of eccentric musical genius Phil Spector and the "girl group" sound of the '60s that he helped create. Spector has also produced the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Ramones and many other superstars. Entertaining and insightful, with many rare interviews with those who knew and worked with him throughout the years. I highly recommend this DVD to any fan of pop music.
