This review is from: Phil Talks With Quill (Audio CD)
Six month after the great "PHIL & QUILL WITH PRESTIGE" album came out, this album, "PHIL TALKS WITH QUILL" was recorded. The first "PHIL & QUILL" was recorded in Hackensack by the great Rudy Van Gelder for Prestige records. You can read my review of that one as well here on Amazon. This CD, "PHIL TALKS WITH QUILL" was recorded six months later, on Sept. 11,1957 in NYC. The recording quality is superb. The playing, TREMEMDOUS. The Personnel are Phil Woods on Alto sax, Gene Quill on Alto Sax, Bob Corwin on Piano, he replaces George Syran who was on the original "PHIL & QUILL" Nick Stabulas on Drums, and Sonny Dallas on Bass, who replaces Teddy Kotick who was on the original "PHIL & QUILL". Amazing stuff. If you love BOP and you loved the original "PHIL & QUILL" on Prestige, then you will absolutely flip over this one. The six cuts are: 1-DOXIE (DOXY)I. 2- A NIGHT IN TUNISIA, 3-HYMN FOR KIM, 4-DEAR OLD STOCKHOLM, 5-SCRAPPLE FROM THE APPLE, and 6-DOXIE (DOXY)II. This is amazing stuff, and another great that includes the relatively unknown great alto player, Gene Quill. You can also hear more Gene Quill on the album called "BIRD FEATHERS" and on "THREE BONES AND A QUILL". You will not be disappointed. You might even be AMAZED!
