Phil Vassar is a phenomenal artist!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Phil Vassar (Audio CD)
When I heard Carlene on CMT, I was shocked that Phil Vassar was releasing an album! I've loved the songs that he's written, like I'm Alright and Bye, Bye (Jo Dee Messina), and was very anxious to see if he would shine vocally too. There are three aspects that I love about this album, and here they are, in order: Lyrical and musical quality (what Vassar is best at!), piano structure, and Vassar's vocal enthusiasm. His voice is very, very good, but not amazing, yet he has a vocal strength and familiarity with these songs that can't be missed. And he plays it up in this album! It is very entertaining. The piano is foundational to every song (Vassar has mastered the piano as well) and reminds me of Billy Joel, to an extent. The songs are great, especially Carlene, Six-Pack Summer, and Another Day in Paradise. I'm completely impressed by this artist- he co-wrote every song on the album, plays the fundamental instrument (and rocks at it), and sings his heart out! This is a great album with phenomenal songs! You'll be glad you bought it!

A Country Star!,
By Bryan (Newport Beach, Ca) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Phil Vassar (Audio CD)
Simply stated---Phil Vassar is the most under rated country music singer in the industry. In any industry for that matter. This CD is filled with great songs that make you want to sing along with. His great hits that are heard on the radio such as, "Carlene" and "Just Another Day in Paradise" do not take over the CD in any way! Any song on this CD could easily be a hit: "That's When I Love You", "Joe and Rosalita", Six-Pack Summer", "Lucky as Me",......... I could go on to name the whole CD. The CD is filled with a great mixture of songs. Fast songs, slow songs......just a great CD to listen to. If you like country music and if you don't like country music, this CD is a great buy!

Lookin' good Phil Vassar,

This is an excellent CD. The first single, Carlene, is an example of Vassar's writing ability as well his singing ability. The song is fun and great to sing along to. Vassar used to sing in a club/restaurant in the Nashville area and anyone who heard him (and sang along in person) can testify that he is an excellent performer. Vassar really knows how to bring the audience into his performance. I can't say enough good things and I can't wait to hear more!

What an album! When I heard Carlene I was hooked. The song had a quality to it that I had heard before. I thought about the Collin Raye, Jo Dee, Alan, and Tim songs that I loved and low and behold wasn't it Phil who had wrote or co-wrote most of them. Based on that I bought the CD. FANTASTIC Phil! Not really a dud in the bunch. My wife and I can't wait until he tours. We'd love to see him headline, but if he opened for Colin Raye, that would be awesome. I figure with Memorial Day and the start of summer just around the corner "Six Pack Summer" will top the charts!

Incredible Debut,

I had the privilage of seeing Phil perform live recently (in support of Kenny Chesney) and can only marvel at his talents. As well as being an accomplished pianist, his vocal talents are truly awesome. Like many I was suprised to learn that I was familiar with many of his songs, owing to him having written extensivley for other artists, from Tim McGraws latest "Next 30 Years" to Joe Dee Messina, and Alan Jackson - you will have heard much from this guy without ever knowing it. That however doesn't detract from his own performances and this album contains some rich lyrical hits, marking him to be a future huge star. More along the country blues style, his vocal power is stamped over all the tracks on this album, and if this is any indication of what is to come, I for one will be watching with interest. I doubt anyone will be disappointed with having this album in their collection. A Must Have !

Fabulous!,

Like many reviewers here, I bought the CD solely on the strength of "Carlene," but I have to say that rarely have I ever purchased a CD for which I can't find a single track to skip! One has to be impressed with Phil's musical ability - both as a songwriter and pianist, but his vocal style is so much fun! You can't help but be happy when you listen to this CD. Go get it!

Buy it now, before it turns into a Greatest Hits album!,

Almost 15 years ago, I heard Phil Vassar sing for the first time. My perspective was a little different then, as I and many of Phil's fellow performers in a touring college ensemble, would marvel at not only the sound of his gifted voice, but his ability to captivate an audience and really bring the song to the forefront of his heart and voice. This newly released, self-titled album brings me back to those moments of hearing him live and in person, and, short of capturing his magnificent personality outside of music, is such an embodiment of who Phil Vassar is as a person. The album is such a wonderful representation of what good recorded music is all about -- clever lyrics, memorable melodies, soulful word pictures, impeccable engineering and musicianship. I venture to say that every song on this album could stand alone as one of today's great country hits and many are sure to find their way to crossover territory. So be sure to buy it soon so you can watch these album cuts find their way to the top of the charts. Every once in a while you have an opportunity to witness success come to one who truly deserves it -- Phil Vassar is truly deserving. And, in the words of his hit single "Carlene", 'You've surpassed everyone's expectations!'

Garth Who???,
By Jewel (Renton, WA USA) - See all my reviews

I seem to remember there used to be a country singer out there that was a total entertainer...personality, a winning smile, confidence and talent. He sang a mix of ballads and upbeat songs that made you sing along and diddybop around the living room or bounce around in the car. I think his name was Garth Something? ;-) Well that guy can hang up his hat and move off the stage, 'cause Phil Vassar is movin' in!! I simply cannot believe that this guy has been 'only' a songwriter for so long when he deserved to be behind the microphone as well as behind the pen.I can't remember the last time I enjoyed every single song on a CD. I can't remember the last country singer that sang of HAPPY and LOVE and FUN most of the time, without having to toss in all the requisite country cheatin' songs and tunes about the wife taking the dog and the truck and moving in with the plumber. Phil is an amazingly talented musician and songwriter, and has a voice...oh, that voice. The voice that can make me forget that I'm a 40 year old married woman, and instantly turn me into the 13 year old swooning over Donny Osmond and David Cassidy. Phil Vassar wraps everything up into one neat package and ties it with a big red bow...and I can't wait to unwrap that package every time I get into my car and turn on my stereo. ;o)

Phil hasn't changed a bit,

Several years ago my wife and I frequented a small restaurant/club in Nashville named the Courtyard Cafe. We went every weekend to hear a young singer named Phil. He played covers of various popular songs (many times his version was much better than the original). We love to think that we "discovered" him before he made it big. His current album is further proof of his outstanding songwriting and performing skills.

An excellent album...,

I had heard "Carlene" and "Another Day In Paradise" on the radio in St. Louis and in Cleveland, and based on those two songs, I decided to get the album. To say it simply, there are no slow points on the album; you can pop it in the CD player, drive for several hours and be completely content. I am already anxious to buy his next album!
