Solid Debut Release,
By Jon Wymore "jnwymore" (Midland, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Phil Wickham (Audio CD)
Phil Wickham first became known to me for being the "free song of the week" download on iTunes with his song "Grace". Now hearing the rest of the album I can truly say that Phil Wickham is here to stay! This is a very good album!
Phil's sound is a mixture of Coldplay, a tiny bit of folk, acoustic rock, and some Jason Morant. His voice to me actually sounds very similar to Jason Morant as well as alot of the stylings and lyrics of his worship songs. Phil does add enough of his own sound to make him stand out and should make him many fans. All in all Phil Wickham puts together a solid release of worship songs without sounding like every other worship album. If you are looking for something truly unique with a great acoustic rock sound then check out Phil Wickham and enjoy the musical journey he takes you on.

Why I bought this CD...(a bit of trivia),
By Barry L. Wallace "barwal" (Sikeston, MO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Phil Wickham (Audio CD)
Ironically, I had never heard anything by Phil Wickham when I purchased this CD (and I normally don't buy anything I haven't listened to). However, I read an article about Phil and discovered that his father was John Wickham, a member of one of my favorite "Jesus Music" groups in the early '70s. Overcome with nostalgia, I bought Phil's CD!!
I have to tell you, though, I love this CD. It probably goes without saying that it's NOTHING like his father's music. It's also nothing like most of the other music on the Christian market today, which is a GOOD thing. Some reviewers compare his voice and music style to Jason Morant, but I think his sound is much better than Morant's. The comparison to Coldplay is probably better. My 16 year old daughter, who happens to like Keane, sees some similarities between their music and Phil's. All comparisons aside, I think Phil's voice and music are both somewhat unique. I'll close with an observation about the last cut on this release. Musically, "Holy, Holy, Holy" may be one of the simplest songs on the CD. However, it is hauntingly beautiful, and the lyrics provide a profound glimpse of the glory and majesty of God. What more could you ask for from a mere song?

I can't begin to tell you how gifted this man is. I first heard of him from a friend who wanted me to listen to his first album, Give You my World. I couldn't stop playing that CD, then after meeting him and seeing his heart for people and the way that he was so transparent in his music to Jesus Christ, I expected the same thing from this album.
To this date I have only taken it out of my CD player maybe a handful of times. I have had the CD since its release in April. Phil Wickham is not like everything else you hear or see out there. His music will bless you and bring you to a place where you are alone with God. Buy this CD, take the time and fall more in love with God as you too, sing these love songs to Him. Be blessed!

Best New Artist,
This review is from: Phil Wickham (Audio CD)
For those who think of Christian music being "feel goody, simplistic" etc, etc, this artist will change your mind. He writes his own lyrics and for such a young artist, blows me away with his obvious devotion for God. This is a must for your collection as well as Give You My World, his first CD. If you get a chance to see him in concert, take advantage. He is so gifted.

Amazing artist!,

I just attended Mercy Me's mini-concert in a Christian Bookstore, and Phil came as well. I was amazed by his vocals, and all-around talent. I've read some reviews which say he's too young, and "just okay," but I venture to say he's better than okay. His passion was more than evident, and that alone makes his music worth listening to.

Breath of fresh air,

I got this cd the day it came out, and have not been able to stop listening to it since then.....and oddly enough have not gotten tired of it. I had heard his first single "Grace" on the radio before this cd's release and just knew I had to have it. This album is a breath of fresh air from all the other christian music out there they play on the radio. His voice is beautifully unique. This album truly leads me into the presence of God everytime I listen to it. The lyrics are full of worship and adoration towards God, absolutely lovely.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I purchased and LOVED Phil Wickham's CD "Cannons" and it is one of my favorite CD's. I love his style, his voice, his passionate lyrics. He personifies great praise music and does it with a U2-Keene feel. With that said, I was a little hesitant to buy this CD...I figured I would be a little disappointed with his debut album after loving his sophomore album so much. In my mind, I figured it just can't be a good. But I was wrong. It is just as good.
I was hooked right away with the opening song "Grace." This is a powerful song and Phil's vibrato is perfection. This song is just as strong as any on "Cannons." But it doesn't end there. I loved "Messiah," "Mystery," especially "Divine Romance," and "I Will Wait For You There," which is a powerful acoustic song (with some strings). And "Holy, Holy, Holy" is also quite powerful. This CD has a little less British rock feel as "Cannons," where that influence is more prevalent, but you can still hear it in his voice. He has an amazing gift and he is a major talent in a watered-down Praise and Worship industry. His lyrics, though simple at times, are still poetic and truly reflect a passion and desire to follow and praise God. We need more like him. If you don't have this CD or "Cannons," get immediately!

Wow,

This is an incredible debut from Phil Wickham. I had high hopes for it and it surpassed my expectations. His voice is incredible although I would disagree with the last reviewer saying he sounds like John Mayer or Jason Mraz. I would agree on the Coldplay comparison, but his voice is more Jeff Buckley-esque.

Solid Album,

This album is solid. A friend recommended this artist to me and now I have all his albums. This one is definitely more acoustic driven, but I love that stuff. It reminds me of artist, "Brandon Bee."
