Editorial Reviews

Philadelphia Road The Best Of is the first Best Of compilation of The Bacon Brothers, which reflects the musical work of Kevin and Michael Bacon from the last 15 years. The Best Of contains 18 original Tracks plus one guest performance with the Bellamy Brothers. The record is laden with the brothers trademark gritty Rock and a touch of Philly soul, and harkens back to those roots in the City Of Brotherly Love, when life was less complicated and music filled the air.

The Bacon Brothers are one of the best kept secrets in the music industry...hopefully this CD will help change that! It is a great collection of songs from their first CDs. It gives you a good feel for their sound. Basically whoever is singing lead wrote the song. You'll find out that Kevin is not only an amazing actor but also a talented singer/songwriter. Michael is a professional musician known for scoring movies and documentaries. Their unique talents combine to create a pleasing folk/rock sound. The brothers are backed up by an incredibly talented band which adds richness to their sound. Their live shows are even better than their CDs, so if you get the chance to see them live, go! They are also on Facebook ([...]) and [...].

I found these guys about 12 years ago, accidentally, and have been a huge fan ever since. Their concerts are so fun, and their albums are full of clever lyrics and a nice variety of musical styles. I recommend their albums to everyone I know. This will be a great compilation to give as a gift. It's worth your while to grab a copy, then go to their website and find out when they're playing in your area. You won't regret it.

After people are through being surprised by how talented The Bacon Brothers band are and learn that they were playing together long before Kevin was an actor, the music itself sinks in: high quality musicianship combined with songwriting of serious depth. There's real craftsmanship here. While women enjoy the mix of folk, rock, country, and soul (dubbed FOROSCO by the the Brothers), men who spend some time with the songs will find the lyrics resonate and speak volumes about manhood and who Kevin and Micheal are as individuals.
The album starts with a somber reflection on 9/11 ten years later, then moves to "Old Guitars," which is done in a style that reminds me of the Beach Boys or Jan & Dean. "Guess Again" has become a personal anthem, a song that artfully pits public face against reality and reminds us that life never quite lives up to imagination, and that's okay. It is echoed by the narrative "Grey Green Eyes" that tells of a failed gig.
"Only A Good Woman" is one of those songs that both genders enjoy, but seems to be a call for boys to be men and treat well. "Baby Steps", another personal anthem of sorts, again speaks right to men who might be all about "Get a Little" (another song, not on this album), as does "Getting There"--all stirring songs that concert goers typically sing along with.
The sentimental, reflective, and romantic side of the Bacon Brothers comes through in "10 Years in Mexico," "Memorize," and "Angelina," another favorite. The lyric, "You've done everything that you can do to save the world today" gets me every time, almost giving permission to slow down and leave ambition for another day.
One last standout I'll mention is "Don't Lose Me Boy," a well-crafted ode to coming of age and empty nest syndrome. Like the Bacon Brothers themselves, they'll grow on you quickly. Savor every minute.

Philly's own Bacon Brothers choose what they feel is their best. Kevin proves he can do more than act, though I feel Michael is the better writer and singer

I'll agree with reviewer M. Locke about the reason for the four stars I'm giving this CD. I'm not sure what CD "M" got back in January - or the review posted last November (2011) - because the release date on the CD I got (and properly listed on Amazon) is June 19, 2012.

Anyway, not all the songs here are great - after all they were recorded and released over a period of 15 years - but the "best" of each album was chosen (at least in the opinion of the "Brothers") and I like what's here. Hence my four stars. Just not enough to give it the top rating.

I go back a LONG way with at least one of the Bacons - Michael. Michael (along with his then partner celloist Larry Gold - now a recording studio owner in Philly) were regulars on the Philly club circuit in the early 70s, when their duo was named Good News. They had a great Lp on Columbia and then parted ways. Michael continued to perform here in Philly and released a couple of Lps, also on Columbia. I still have those and play them. He then moved to NYC and started composing music for commercials and TV. A few years later his "baby brother" Kevin - at that point a well-known actor (whose best performance IMHO was in the overlooked "Telling Lies In America" about a disk jockey modeled after Philly DJ legend Jerry Blavat - check it out!) - had time between films and started gigging with Michael and writing songs. I've seen the Bacons perform live a few times and they put on a great show.\

But back to this CD. I'll be upfront and say that I prefer Michael's songs, and his distinctive voice, to Kev's but that's being subjective.

This CD is a great compilation of the Bacon Brothers' songs. People don't seem to give this band enough credit. If you haven't taken the time to take a listen, you should. Their music is fun, heartfelt, and inspirational. BTW, if you have the chance to catch them live - even better!!!

While I gave this cd 5 stars I don't think it's a total representation of The Bacon Brothers music from their beginnings to their music to date. I gave it 5 stars because each of these songs ARE the best of their first 3 cds, with the addition of a somewhat recent collaboration with The Bellamy Brothers and a re-mix of Unhappy Birthday. When I think of a "Best Of" collection I think it should be representative of a band's work up to that point. When I first saw what songs were on the cd I thought, "How could they have a Best Of cd and not include songs like Write a Song and Peace Dance, (White Knuckles), or Children, Wildlife, and New Year's Day, (New Year's Day)? But that's just this long-time fan's opinion.

With that said, every song on this cd is a fine representation of the Bacon Brothers finest music from their first 3 cds, FOROSOCO, Getting There, and Can't Complain, with 2 exceptions. Unhappy Birthday came from their White Knuckles cd, this being a re-mix for the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, and Guilty of the Crime is the above mentioned collaboration. If you want to experience the Best OF The Bacon Brothers music during their early years this is the cd to buy. It's the best representation of Kevin and Michael as songwriters and of the band's evolution of style. As the band has grown, so has their music and the tightness of the band as a whole.

I highly recommend this cd, especially if you have never heard the Bacon Brothers music. This is a true sampling of their best from the early years. But I would also highly recommend White Knuckles and New Year's Day to get the full picture of Bacon Brothers music. To get the FULL experience that is Bacon Brothers???....See them live!!!
