The shape of things to come, June 5, 2001
This review is from: Philadelphia Roots (Audio CD)
Interesting compilation featuring rare tracks from the Phil LA of Soul and Neptune labels from 1965 to 1973(the latter label was formed by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff during their pre-Philadelphia International days). The quality of such little known songs such as Bunny Sigler's "Great Big Liar", Fantastic Johnny C's beautiful "Waiting For The Rain" and the Panic Button's goofy but rockin' instrumental "O Wow" ranks right up there with the best work presented in this genre. And on "Chained and Bound", Alfreda Brockington's commanding vocals pack a mighty big punch over the hot, driving Philly rhythm and horn tracks. Great liner notes and rare pictures. My only complaint is that the compilation's too short. Its 17 songs only total 45 minutes of playing time.
