Biography

Has it really been almost three years since Philharmonics? Agnes Obel’s debut album still sounds as fresh as a daisy. A delicate flower which became a quiet phenomenom, selling almost half a million copies to date. Philharmonics received a gold award in Holland, platinum awards in Belgium and France, and went quintuple platinum in her native state of Denmark, where Agnes won five Danish ... Editorial Reviews

The Danish-born Berlin-based singer-songwriter Agnes Obel has landed a pan-European hit with her disarmingly beautiful debut album 'Philharmonics'. The deluxe double CD version of the album includes a second CD featuring six tracks recorded at Obel's recent acclaimed residency of sold-out shows in Copenhagen and five instrumental piano performances.

I fell in love with Agnes from first listen.
Amy
The folky sound of her voice (bordering on ethereal) with the muted piano is quite a combination to enjoy.
Amazon Customer
Her voice is angelic and the music beautiful.

There isn't much I can say besides that I'm completely delighted with her music. Her voice is warm and clear. The songs are very addictive and truly peaceful. I heard a song in a fnac and couldn't move before it ended. Listen to the samples.

Once I put this in my cd player, I didn't take it out for about 2 weeks straight. This album is emotion and meditation set to melody. When I listen to this, it's as though my mind lets go of all stresses in my life and I'm able to relax. Very glad I made this purchase and will be looking for more work by Agnes.

My pick for album of the year - so far - every track on Agnes Obel's Philharmonics is like a soothing balm to my ears; melodious, relaxing, almost ethereal.

Her style falls somewhere between the whimsical charm of Australian singer-songwriter Julia Stone (of Angus and Julia Stone) and godmother of the genre, Kate Bush - albeit with very little of the latter's kookiness.

Next to her wondrous piano playing skills, the most captivating part of this album for me is Agnes Obel's subtle, multi-layered vocal harmonies. If I have one criticism however, it would probably be that the album doesn't really stretch any musical boundaries, being extremely mellow to a point where it just narrowly avoids the dreaded label "easy listening".

At times I almost wish Agnes would break out into the kind of off-beat vocal gymnastics employed by someone like Bjork or the aforementioned Ms Bush, yet, as she obviously wasn't aiming for that kind of sound I refuse to knock off a star just because I personally would've have liked to see how far she could take this material.

My daughter gave me this cd for Christmas and I never heard of Agnes Obel before, but this is one of my favorite cds. I have a 8 month old grandaughter and she does not want to take a nap. We found if we play Agnes Obel within 5 minutes she will be sleep, its a miracle!

On a whim, I downloaded this b/c it came as a recommendation based on other music I had purchased. Wow, I cannot believe how much I listen, love, think about this music! It is what I listen to in a bath, when putting kids to bed, you name it, it is appropriate. I cannot believe how much I listen to this and never get tired of it. Please keep making music, Agnes!

I am thoroughly enjoying this album. it is actual music, real songs - unlike what is being passed off as music in the last 10 or so years.
I can't listen to the radio because everything is just horrible monotony without any inspiration or creativity behind it. if it isn't a remake (and a terrible one at that) it's just the same two lines repeated for 5 grueling minutes - and then on to the next horrible repetitive noise.

Agnes Obel is a breath of fresh air. songs with more than two lines of lyrics. music that lifts and transports you. beautiful sounds that draw you in and hold you comfortably there.
her voice is beautiful and enchanting and it makes me feel like singing along... she makes me feel like I can sing!
the melody - wonderful. the harmony - moving.

Thank you, Agnes, for writing something refreshing and something worth listening to.
