Book Description

September 1, 2000
THE HIGH SCHOOL OF THE FUTURE . . . "You've never wondered what the meaning of life is, have you?" asked my teacher. I shook my head. "I thought people who were depressed asked those kind of questions." "Okay. Then Quinn, I'll have to be more direct. Middlevale isn't Middlevale. Eisenhower isn't truly an accredited American high school. I'm not me, and you're not you!" "Then who are we?" "Victims!" Her finger shot in the air. "Victims of some sort of experiment! Some kind of psycho-social experiment perpetrated by scientists without principle, a government without morals!" Her dewlaps quivered with indignity. My head was spinning again. I tried to speak but I couldn't. "These ears . . . open them up and you'll find microchip monitors and controls. And judging by the kind of 'visions' we've both seen, I'd also say you'd also find some kind of mind-cloak device, adjusted to auditory and visual aspects of our brains, normalizing the odd things that may abound in this laboratory environment." I blinked. "You mean, it's all a joke?" "A bad one. A total farce." "You're telling me . . . You're saying that it's all a set-up? But how long has this been going on, then?" "Hard to say. Part of your memories could have been programmed." "Programmed?" I stared. "Like computers."

More About the Author

David Bischoff has published over one hundred novels including THE SELKIE, THE JUDAS CROSS and THE GAMING MAGI TRILOGY.

"I'm so pleased to both THE DESTINY DICE and WRAITH BOARD, the first in my fantasy trilogy THE GAMING MAGI, in ebook format. I let my imagination run wild on this one. I did it before A GAME OF THRONES by George R.R. Martin and I'm thrilled it's reached a kind of cult status -- particularly amongst computer gamers and designers who've told me it influenced them."

Bischoff's other novels now available on the Kindle include TIN WOODMAN, the basis for the STAR TREK:THE NEXT GENERATION episode "Tin Man" and the STAR HOUNDS series.

"Wow," says Bischoff. "When I put THE INFINITE BATTLE out, it roared right up
the charts."

Book Two STAR HOUNDS: GALACTIC WARRIORS and Book Three STAR HOUNDS: THE MACROCOSMIC CONFLICT have just been released.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bischoff keeps the sprit alive, April 22, 2003

A friend let me read this book, it was one of the few books that I have read and had to go and buy a copy. Mr. Bischoff keeps true to the sprit of Philip K. Dick, but has done a story that stand on its own. I think and any person that enjoys the novels and short stories by Philip K. Dick will enjoy this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad plot, bad style, unoriginal clichéd mess, March 2, 2011
This review is from: Philip K. Dick High (Paperback)

I bought this book on a whim when I saw it in the Oxfam book shop . I liked the form factor and the silly title that makes you think it's a Philip K. Dick book when actually it's not, it's by David Bischoff. I'd heard of Bischoff before but realised that was because he's written a few memorable Star Trek: TNG episodes ("Tin Man" anyone?).

So it didn't take me long to read, it's only 150 pages but that doesn't mean it wasn't without pain! To give credit where it's due, I was quite taken in by the first couple of chapters. The style was a bit off, something between a screenplay and a modern novel with a first person narration but I liked learning about the increasingly weird world of the main character, 'Quinn Roberts' - high-school jock supremo blah. Unfortunately a promising 30 page short story dragged on to become a hideously cliched, unoriginal bad b-movie sci-fi adventure not even worthy of mid-nineties Australian children's television.

To sum up this book is possibly the worst sci-fi I've ever read, the plot and it's many unlikely and unnecessary twists feel like they were written by teenager. For a book written in 2000 it feels thoroughly planted in the 1980s andI wouldn't recommend it to anyone. Rubbish.
