This review is from: Philip Glass: Another Look at Harmony - Part IV (Audio CD)
Another Look at Harmony Part IV is a 1975 composition, just preceding Glass' breakthrough performance of Einstein on the Beach. While it shares the sung solfege syllables with Einstein, its thickly layered sounds and almost passionate warmth clearly anticipate Satyagraha. Although it begins with the suggestion of a religious chant, the piece develops into several thrilling climaxes that are best enjoyed at full volume. An unforgettable experience.
I came to adore this piece through the excellent earlier recording, made in 1989 and released in 2002, but I find this version by the Choir of the 21st Century to be superior. Indeed, the recording deserves an award for its technical quality as well as its mesmerizing, transporting sonorities. This is one of the very best recordings in the Glass catalogue, and lasts a generous 60 minutes on one disk.
