Editorial Reviews

Explore the life of Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winning novelist Philip Roth, often referred to as the greatest living American writer. Goodbye, Columbus, his collection of short stories published in 1959, put the 26-year-old Roth on the map, and 10 years later, Portnoy's Complaint propelled him into an international scandalous spotlight. Yet he steadily earned his reputation as a man of letters, commanding ownership of the Jewish-American novel and making Newark, New Jersey, a literary destination. Practically inventing the genre of factual-fictional autobiography, Roth's thinly veiled Zuckerman books follow the protagonist's path from aspiring young writer to compromised celebrity, and, lately, older man facing death. Roth's career was considered declining by 1990 and then exploded with a dozen bestsellers in the past two decades, including Sabbath's Theater (1995), American Pastoral (1997) and The Human Stain (2000).

Top Customer Reviews

In these days of flash in the pan celebrities Roth stands out as an artist who has devoted his life to creating some of te most memorable characters in American fiction cast in language as razor-sharp as anything written in the past hundred years.
Mr. Roth appears here as urbane, modest, witty, charming, and intense. I was fortunate enough to meet him at his 80th Birthday gala held in Newark's Art Museum and found him to be extremely courteous. Any fan of this great author should purchase this as it gives a well-rounded portrait of the man and of the artist.

It is a wonderful blend of the author and some of his friends talking about his work.

Roth is an excellent interview subject. He seems forthcoming and honest and is naturally well-spoken. Commentary by various people who knew him is kind of interesting but too broken up and some of it is over the top, flattery that would make Shakespeare blush. Take some of the hagiography with a grain, well a kilo, of salt and the rest is definitely worthwhile.

Greatness so subtle, as in the quiet world surrounding this immense writer. The simplicity of working, moving forward, having something to say...such a gift, not to be ignored. Roth is and nothing else matters.
