It's pretty simple, this bookcase is one of the worst products I've ever bought. While I thought, from the descriptions and the price, that this was a high-quality piece of furniture, it's not. The materials are all a composite fiberboard with a veneer overlay (no real wood anywhere in this.)
The original unit arrived with one of the pieces just broken. Another piece broke apart during assembly with no force applied to it (the particleboard is that flimsy).
It's not just the materials that are the problem, the workmanship on the pieces is terrible. I've worked with many flat pack furniture types and this is the worst quality build I've ever seen. The holes for the cam locks were drilled inconsistently, some were way too large and some were too small. Pieces did not fit together cleanly and the resulting product does not feel solid.
Whenever I'm looking at reviews, I tend to ignore the extreme bads and the extreme goods. I tend to think that someone who is yelling about how bad something is, probably had a uniquely bad experience and they have an axe to grind. I am certainly upset about this product, but it's genuinely shoddy. If it was sold for $100, it might be worth it. It's a good sized, book-case. It's just not close to the price it's being sold for (and this particular model was the best price for this unit on Amazon.) The quality/cost ratio on this one appears to be extremely off.

Get any other bookcase and you will get better quality. Go to Wal-Mart and you will get better quality for $40. Just don't buy this one.
