Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Photographs of film celebrities try to reveal more than their movies do. Whether looking surprised or carefully posed, celebrities have the visual control of themselves and how they look down to a science. This large, aggressive book of sometimes astonishing, sometimes quiet photographs shows the generous archive of black-and-white celebrity shots left to us by Philippe Halsman (1906?79). Halsman brought originality, respect, and confidence to his work. What's missing here is Halsman himself getting his self-conscious subjects to leap or slouch or sneer or bask in their own glory; whether or not we admire the work of this incredibly gifted photographer, we can't help but appreciate his ability to reveal the people he shot. Jane Halsman Bello, the photographer's daughter, and her husband have arranged the book alphabetically by celebrity surname. Big, beautiful, and recommended for general collections.?David Bryant, New Canaan P.L., CT

5.0 out of 5 stars A fresh insight on old faces, April 2, 2000

This review is from: Philippe Halsman: A Retrospective - Photgraphs From the Halsman Family Collection (Hardcover)
Halsman offers more than the standard potrait photography we have grown accustomed to. He offers a fresh perspective to faces we have seen countless times, by offering us an intimate look into thier lives. For instance, how many people would think to photograph Monroe pumping iron, or Richard Nixon jumping up and down like a little boy. It is this inginuity that allows the audience to appreciate a different side to these celebrities. I am a longtime fan of Halsman's work, and i would strongly recommend that anyone intersted in the stars of the 50's -70's to get this book. You will appreciate seeing them in a new light.

This review is from: Philippe Halsman: A Retrospective - Photgraphs From the Halsman Family Collection (Hardcover)
I know the Halsman family personally and I have long been a fan of Phillippe Halsman. He seemed to be able to capture the fleeting expressions of his subjects at the perfect moment in time. He is famous for his photos of Salvador Dali, but this book demonstrates that he has the same ability to connect nearly any subject to its audience.
