4.0 out of 5 stars Philippine Folk-Tales, February 3, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is complied from essays by different authors, which gives differing insight into the stories and allows for a broader breadth of subject, but it also means that several tales are repeated, and that some are not as interesting than others.

Many of the stories are typical Eurasian tales as brought to the Philippines by the Spanish (among others). They had regional twists, but weren't very different from tales any Westerner would know.

There were also a number of short and generally macabre folk-tales and myths interspersed through the Westernish ones. The final section of the book had a bunch of unique tales of the sort I'd been expecting, and it had more discussion of the tales (more foot notes, mentions of words in the original language, ect). There was also a section of traditional children's games, which could be fun. All in all there are well over 50 tales in this book of various quality and length.

There is no active Table of Contents, and the end-notes are not linked--making them essentially useless.

Another (and maybe slightly better) book of Philippine Folk-Tales is Philippine Folk Tales by Mabel Cole Cook.
