Book Description

June 2004
But one day, while they were laughing and singing, the earth suddenly opened and Harisaboqued sprang out before them. They were very much frightened and fled in terror down the mountain side. When they reached the foot and looked back they saw a terrible sight. All the tobacco had disappeared and, instead of the thousands of plants that they had tended so carefully, nothing but the bare mountain could be seen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Philippine education, December 13, 2009

This review is from: Philippine Folklore Stories (Paperback)
This book was a delight to my wife who grew up in the Philippines and an education for me, helping me to understand the fairy tales different from my US upbringing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Philippine Folk-Tales, March 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book contained a bunch of folktales and folklore from the Philippines. They were slightly polished for an audience of Western children (not that there's anything wrong with that), which makes this a very family-friendly book. Each story also begins with a short description of where the story comes from or what it means to the original tellers, so it was informative as well as a good read.

The table of contents is inactive and there are no illustrations, but otherwise I didn't see any formatting or scanning errors.

Stories contained are:

The Tobaccos of Harisaboqued
The Pericos
The Passing of Loku
The Light of the Fly
Mangita and Larina
How the World Was Made
The Silver Shower
The Faithlessness of Sinogo
Catalina of Dumaguete
The Fall of Polobulac
The Escape of Juanita
The Anting-Anting of Manuelito
When the Lilies Return

Less polished Philippine Folk-tales can be found in Philippine Folk Tales and in Philippine Folk-Tales

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning about new cultures, July 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was among the first books I uploaded to my Kindle. The best way to learn about a foreign culture is always through the stories and legends of the people. I must say I enjoyed the Philippine Folklore Stories a lot! I read them all in one day and I learnt everything from why the vulcano on one of the islands is still active to how an amulet can protect you form harm. The stories are a great reading for kids and adults alike!
