5.0 out of 5 stars Really good quality display and good looking frame
This Digital photo frame looks really good. Pictures on the web sites don't do it justice, the frame is better than most others. It's solidly built, and a good feature is that it has battery backup, which gives you up to plenty of time to view photos wihtout having to be connected to the power supply. it's faster than many others.

2.0 out of 5 stars Good picture quality but lots of issues
The picture quality is good. Bright, good contrast and nice color. However there are other issues with this photo frame:

1. The advertised panel resolution is 800x480. However, it turns out that the actual "displayable" resolution is only 720x480. I noticed that the specification indicates "effective viewing area" of 9.4" versus the "LCD size" of 10.2"...

This review is from: Philips 10.2-inch Digital Photo Frame with 9.4-Inch Viewable LCD Display (Metal) (Electronics)
The picture quality is good. Bright, good contrast and nice color. However there are other issues with this photo frame:

1. The advertised panel resolution is 800x480. However, it turns out that the actual "displayable" resolution is only 720x480. I noticed that the specification indicates "effective viewing area" of 9.4" versus the "LCD size" of 10.2" but there is nothing about "effective resolution". 720x480 is not much better from 640x480 while 800x480 sounds close to 800x600.

2. The provided Photo Manager software and the "Smart Photo Storage" firmware crops/scales the pictures to 720x560 pixels only. So, when displayed, the "effective resolution" of 720x480 will crop out the top and bottom part of the picture, totally out of control.

3. The Photo Manager software will only save the cropped picture back to the same folder as the original picture by adding the letters "- new' at the end of the file name. So, after converting hunderds of files, it takes you long time to dig out the "new" pictures ONE-BY-ONE and move them out to memory card or to the photo frame. If the converted output can be saved into a different folder instead of the original one, all it needs will be selecting all files in the new folder instead of looking for them one-by-one.

4. The viewing angle is advertised as 110 degrees vertical. In fact it's about 80 degrees. To make it worse, it's not +/-40 degrees. Instead, it's -5, +75 degrees. That means if you put the frame on a shelf and sit down, you will only see very dark display.

5. Slideshow management is a joke. First of all, whatever slideshows created cannot be played automaticaly. Each time the frame is turned on, you have to go through the length menu to select the show to start. Even if a show is set to "All albums", it will only show pictures in the built-in memory. Pictures in the memory cards are not shown until you go to set up menu and go through the complicated steps again to select CF and start the show again. (You have to do this EVERY TIME). If the internal memory has no pictures, the unit will just get stuck when you want to start "Slideshow" by pressing the "Start Slideshow" button without selecting the memory card first. (There was once that it has got so stuck that no buttons will work - even the power button will not work. I had to reset the unit throught the "reset" hole).

6. It supposed to be able to turn on/off automatically with the preset timers. However, the auto on/off only works if you have left the frame on and let it turn off by itself at the "auto off" time. If you had turn off the frame manually, it will never automatically turn on.

It doesn't have a nice calendar setup, like some others, but that's not what I wanted it for.
I highly recommend this product. at $150 you can't beat it....

I am very pleased with this digital frame. The picture quality is great, the collage feature is also nice so you don't end up with tons of wasted side space. Transitions are creative. The frame itself is very sturdy. I have had it for over a month now and have had no problems. The menu is a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it there are no problems. I currently have a 1gb card in and it runs 24/7.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful frame & beautiful packaging!, May 2, 2008
This review is from: Philips 10.2-inch Digital Photo Frame with 9.4-Inch Viewable LCD Display (Metal) (Electronics)
Not only is the frame very attractive, but I am truly impressed with the packaging! The box is extremely sturdy and appears to be able to be reused as a print photo storage box! The instructions came in its own little "box" to keep them together for the future (similar to the way my HP notebook instructions came.) I am excited to give this as a gift! The frame is very easy to use and I love the fact that the buttons are ON the frame rather than on a remote control. I just wish this model also was available in a wood frame so I could also get one for myself that would fit better into my decor!! Great frame for the price!

3.0 out of 5 stars Bought for my Parents, June 28, 2008

This review is from: Philips 10.2-inch Digital Photo Frame with 9.4-Inch Viewable LCD Display (Metal) (Electronics)
I bought this digital picture frame for my parents who are not technically savvy. They have a difficult time with the controls as I did setting it up for them. The unit has some nice features that are menu driven but the problem is that you cannot set up a slideshow to see each time it is turned on. You have to setup whatever you want to see each time you turn it on. I would have hoped they could use the auto ON-OFF feature to resume where they were before. Other than that, the unit displays pictures nicely and has the automatic feature of picture orientation whether you have the frame setup landscape or poratrait on a table. The SD card appears to only able to be programmed if loaded from a computer. In other words, if you just load pictures from a camera or computer, but do not set them up with the special software, you are not able to program them into a useful slideshow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Quality and Very Elegant Digital Photo Fram, May 22, 2008

This review is from: Philips 10.2-inch Digital Photo Frame with 9.4-Inch Viewable LCD Display (Metal) (Electronics)
I have to say that I am extremely please with this photo frame and the pictures on the web don't do this frame justice. The picture quality is amazing and the transitions between pictures is very creative and add to the enjoyment.

The software provided to convert the pictures on your computer to size required by the photo frame is very easy to use and allows for cropping and small minor modifications to the pictures prior to saving them to the photo frame or media card. The menus on the picture frame itself take a little getting use to but once you figure it out it's all good, there is a manual provided on the cd. One additinal feature you don't find on most photo frames is the internal battery, a nice touch for when you want to move or pick it up to show some one in another room, it lasts about an hour.

Another nice touch is the ability to set the frame to come "on" and turn "off" for three different times for weekdays and two for weekends. No need to run the frame when your not home or at work.

I am really pleased with this product. It was very easy for this non-techie to use and is one of the better looking digital frames that I have seen. I especially appreciate the ease with which I can drag and drop the photos stored on my pc to the digital frame. The battery capability is also great for displaying the frame without ugly cords!

Good quaity, easy to use, clear instructions. Battery power can be improved by providing a removable charger and use of longer lasting litium battery much like used in some DSLRs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mom Doesn't Use It Anymore, May 26, 2009

This review is from: Philips 10.2-inch Digital Photo Frame with 9.4-Inch Viewable LCD Display (Metal) (Electronics)
Bought this for a Mother's Day gift a couple years ago. It's off most of the time, so it's just like an empty picture frame. I'm tempted to cut up a bunch of pictures and paste them to the screen so it's not constantly displaying a useless black background.

My mom loved it at the beginning, but then it became a hassle to keep turning it off and on. Maybe if it had a remote it would be more practical!
