2.0 out of 5 stars 10 months old and problems...
I bought this Philips 27 inch TV in November of 2001. It is now 10 months later and I'm starting to see some problems.

1. Various stations are starting to come in with double images. This is getting progressively worse.
2. I'll turn the TV on and it'll flicker and sometimes show no picture at all. I have to turn it off and on again to fix it.
3. I'll turn...

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding value for the price/performance, August 20, 2001
This review is from: Philips 27PS55S 27" TV (Electronics)
I first saw this TV at BestBuy but it was out of stock in all places like BestBuy, CircuitCity & Costco except floor display model. Finally I located this model here at Amazon which was shipped free to my door during special promotion period.

27PS55S is in a silver cabinet with 3 sets of video input, there's 1 video input locate at side panel with headphone jack which is less distracting than other model's front input. In addition to S-Video, it also provides Component Video input which can only be found in higer priced models. It's not as heavy or deep as other models as well.

The Philips TV screen is more flat than my old sony 27" trinitron & other none pure flat models in store, what brings my attention to this TV at the store is its picture quality & sound, it sounds much better than sony 27FS13 wega & picture quality is as good as (if not better) than those pure flat model when watching DVD in store.

At home I set it up with component input for DVD, RF input for antenna & RCA input for Dish Satellite, since my local TV reception signal is weak, the TV looks more 'grainy' compare with my old Sony, but when watching DVD or Satellite TV, this TV really out shines all models with similar price range I've watched. It takes a little tweaking of video setting to reach the optimum effect. DVD movies looks stunningly good on this set with either Component or S-Video connection.

Remote control can be programmed for up to 3 devices, instead of input preset code, I used it to program my generic satellite receiver command without any problem, buttons are small but adequate enough to provide basic operations.

For mere $299, this model offers outstanding performance/price ratio than any other TV in the market. For more revews or product pic/specification you may try Circuity City's web site.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BUY!!!, November 20, 2001

I purchased this television to start a home theater system, expecting to go out and buy a big speaker set to go with it. Upon setting the televison up and turning it on, I realize I don't need a bunch of speakers. The sound out of this television is phenomenal. It has 4 preprogrammed sound choices (Personal, Music, Voice, or Theater) as well as 5 pictures choices (Personal, Movies, Sports, Weak Signal, and Multimedia) to choose from, so you won't have to play with your image and sound controls depending on what you are viewing. It also has Bass and Treble controls, as well as a balance.
The picture is great (I haven't received my go video yet, so I can't say for certain, but I'm sure it will be even more wonderful in DVD and VHS).
This is just an all around great buy, especially if you are thinking of starting a home theater system. I've always thought Philips makes wonderful products, but they have outdone themselves this time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why Buy Any Other TV?, November 15, 2001
This review is from: Philips 27PS55S 27" TV (Electronics)
This one of the best tvs for the price, not to mention the amazing picture. When I went searching for a new tv, I wanted one with an S-Video input, but this tv not only has that it also has Component Video. Component Video provides the best possible picture for DVD players, and S-Video is perfect for a DBS receiver. This tv also has picture temperature control e.g. cool, normal, and warm.

This tv replaced my old Sharp 13 inch tv. This tv is really hard to find in stock though. I bought this tv at Circuit City, but it is often out of stock there aswell. A little word of warning though, this tv is wider than most 27 inch tvs so make sure your cabinet is wide enough. I really think I made the right choice with this tv and I hope you do too.

3. I'll turn the TV on and there will be no sound. Again, I have to turn it off and on again.

Besides those recent quality issues, I have generally enjoyed this TV. The picture is good and the picture settings (personal, movies, sports, and multimedia) are fun to play with and actually do enhance the respective program.

Another thing, when you change the channel you're probably used to green numbers. Well, this TV has an ugly maroon/brown background with the numbers over that background. It obviously doesn't affect anything, it's just ugly.

I'm sad this TV is having problems because I like Philips and overall, I like this TV. But, after 10 months, I have to pay to get it fixed. It's not worth it. Look at another brand.

This television sells at [a local store] new for [$$$] This is the worst television I have ever purchased. I have had to exchange (3) of them. I am on the (4th) one all of them exhibit the same problem, after you have had them for about 30 days they start to shut off by theirselves. Then they start to loose there color settings, then every time you turn it on. It waits about 15 seconds then shuts off ...

5.0 out of 5 stars For [$] it's a steal!, May 22, 2002

This review is from: Philips 27PS55S 27" TV (Electronics)
It was time to replace our old TV in the bedroom. I didn't want to spent a large sum of money. I researched the web for different 27" models. After researching [a local store], I noticed the Philips 27PS55S got a lot high marks... commented about the outstanding picture quality and sound for a TV priced under [money]... thought this model was better than TV's costing over [more money].
I hooked it up to my DVD using a S-video cable. The picture quality was very impressive and crisp. To my eyes, I thought it was a flat screen. The picture quality was a good if not better than my Sony Trinitron. The other great features on this TV were the different screens (sports and theatre) and the sound fields. The Philips 27PS55S is a excellent TV set that has the picture quality of sets worth over [more money], I would call ahead to make sure [local store] has them, because the sale's clerk told me they sell out quickly.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy, January 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Philips 27PS55S 27" TV (Electronics)
This is an attractive TV, with a easy-to-use remote, good settings capability, and many features. I was very happy with it for the first 3 months I owned it, then the picture quality started to deteriorate and has rapidly grown worse.

After 6 months of use, the TV had a pink semicircle band on the right side of the screen and a green semicircle band on the left side. At the moment, there is still an hourglass shaped area down the middle of the TV that is showing real life colors. This problem can be caused by placing speakers too close to a TV (this is the customer service response which I have recieved), but I didn't have speakers in the same room as this TV.

I have been following up with Philips and Best Buy, but at this point the customer service from both has been poor.

I recommend avoiding Philips products, especially this model.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good TV for a GREAT price., November 8, 2001

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Philips 27PS55S 27" TV (Electronics)
This is a great television for its price. I'm somewhat of a HT nut and an audiophile :), so the picture quality is very important to me. I dont use the tv's speakers, so I can't comment on the sound.
I like the picture on this better than my old 20" sony wega, which was purchased for ... (shipped) compared to the ... shipped for this tv. DVD's viewed with the component video output look great. I used to do the "anamorphic squeeze" on the wega, but I dont feel the need for it on this.
On the down side, if you are planning to use AVIA and calibrate it yourself, it's harder to get into the service menu, than the other brands. You have to remove the back to get into the menu. If you don't know what I'm talking about.....then good for you, you'll never have to obsess over calibration etc.

Overall, great NTSC display at a really good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great picture and lots of inputs, June 30, 2002

I got this TV at [local store] for [money]. What a great deal! Here are the things I like about it. 1) Fantastic picture - very sharp - espcially with DVDs and the component video input. I was surprised to see that it has up to 800 lines of resolution. Many of the other TVs in this price range have much less resolution. Some have as few as 300 - do your homework and see for yourself. 2) The sound is pretty good since there are speakers built into each side - you don't need separate amplifier for most needs 3) Remote is easy to use and you can program 4 buttons with your favorite channels! 4) Sleek appearance and it looks almost like a flat screen. The guy at Target said they sell a lot of these. I can see why.

3.0 out of 5 stars A T.V. from JR's is a refurb, December 22, 2002
This review is from: Philips 27PS55S 27" TV (Electronics)
I was surprised to see this TV listed on Amazon for "such a good price", it seemed too good to be true. I tracked it back to JR's website and there they list it as a refurbished TV. That info was unclear on Amazon's description.
