Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Philips' streamlined, affordable 27PT8302 offers a 27-inch RealFlat, high-definition picture tube for vivid images from a progressive-scan DVD player (at 480p resolution) or an outboard digital set-top box (accepting with both 480p and 1080i inputs). The set's standard, 4:3 aspect ratio matches that of most TV broadcasts, and letterboxing options are available for viewing widescreen programs in their original dimensions.

The set offers numerous image enhancements. Crystal Clear III encompasses velocity-scan modulation and a 2D Y/C digital comb filter, which improves quality of incoming interlaced video signals by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

Velocity-scan modulation improves the definition at picture edges, creating sharper images by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work--say, when rendering transitions from light to dark parts of an image--and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas.

EyeFidelity gives you the choice between different line doubling and scanning techniques--progressive or interlaced--so you can reduce motion artifacts like jagged edges and stair stepping, viewing material in progressive scan (480p) or a line doubled (1050i) picture. Other picture technologies include Digital Color Transient Improvement (CTI), Digital Luminance Transient Improver (LTI), and Digital Histogram.

The set offers stereo reception with 10 watts power per stereo speaker, and a choice of onboard Dolby Virtual Surround or Incredible Surround processing simulates surround sound from any 2 speakers.

Two sets of high-definition component-video inputs (1080i/480p) accommodate a set-top box/HD satellite receiver and a progressive-scan DVD player, while side and rear composite- and S-video inputs accommodate other hardware. Rear-panel audio/video outputs make it a cinch to hook the set up with your home theater surround receiver for a truly enveloping AV experience. A 0.125-inch headphone jack lets you listen in private. The set includes an NTSC tuner (with 100 station presets) for standard TV reception and comes with a Sofa-Lite remote control.

1.0 out of 5 stars BAD Purchase, December 16, 2004

This review is from: Philips 27PT8302/37 27" Real Flat HDTV-Ready TV (Electronics)
This TV is going back to the store tonight. The picture quality has irked me over the last few days. The TV handles shadows badly - I just watched "Lost In Translation", which is dark and shadowy throughout most of the movie, and the quality was atrocious. Also, if there is a lot of motion the screen can hurt your eyes - it pixelizes and becomes quite "crunchy" looking. I have not been happy with this TV since I bought it 5 days ago.

The real kicker came tonight in the middle of the movie. The TV made a popping sound and shut off. When I turned it back on the picture had changed. The set seems to have lost its depth in the blacks. I'm not exactly sure what happened - the guy at the store suggested a power surge? Maybe so, but none of the other components pulgged into the strip were affected, and I've never had this happen with a TV in this home in the 5 years that I've lived here.

I have no information about HDTV reception as it is being hooked up tomorrow. Tonight it's back to the store for this TV and on to another brand. I don't trust it.

well you won't be able to get one of these anymore now. i got mine 6 years ago in 2005, and 6 years later the hd picture is still sharp and clear and bright.

pros
picture is sharp and clear and bright. i use it at 1080i, from component cables and an hd cable box.
the dvd connectors also give a great picture.
3 nice aspect ratio settings, easy to cycle round them

cons
heavy, and it's a crt so is big and deep.
no hdmi
