Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

The Philips 32PT740H is ready for the high-definition world. It offers a true high-definition 1080i picture with widescreen (16:9, enhanced) and full-screen (4:3) display modes. It also features a 3D Y/C digital comb filter, scan velocity modulation, HD component and RGBHV inputs, and side A/V and S-video jacks for a clean look.

The flatter, more square 32-inch high-contrast tube provides a wider viewing angle while minimizing reflections for the best picture possible. With the Active Control video function, noise and sharpness are continuously optimized 60 times per second.

The 3D Y/C digital comb filter separates chrominance (color) from luminance (brightness) information for independent processing to improve picture resolution and minimize distortion, while scan velocity modulation varies the electron beam speed for a more finely rendered picture with improved sharpness. The AutoPicture function instantly optimizes brightness, contrast, color, tint and sharpness settings with picture presets for movies, sports, video games, and weak signal reception. Philips' Eye Fidelity line-doubling feature gives you the choice between progressive scan (480p) or a line-doubled (1080i) picture when viewing non-HD broadcasts.

This set has a built-in 181-channel tuner and two built-in speakers (10 watts apiece) that provide virtual surround sound. It's compatible with 1080i and 480p high-definition signals with an optional HDTV tuner. With the AutoSound feature, audio volume levels are automatically adjusted and optimized with the choice of three presets: Movies, Voice, Music, plus an adjustable personal setting.

The included universal remote controls all TV features plus virtually all brands of VCR, DVD, cable TV converters, and digital broadcast satellite receivers. The 32PT740H has HD component and RGBHV inputs for easy connection to HD set-top decoders and progressive-scan DVD players. It also offers 3 composite A/V inputs (1 side), 1 A/V output, 2 S-video inputs (1 side), 2 component inputs, and a headphone jack on the side.

Tech Talk
Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio refers to the shape of the video image. Standard television has a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is almost square in appearance. Digital television will have either a 4:3 or 16:9 aspect ratio, which is widescreen and appears rectangular, looking more like a movie screen and filling more of the viewer's field of vision for a more lifelike viewing experience.

Scanning method: Frames of video are made up of many lines of video that are scanned onto a television screen so closely they appear to be a solid picture. The scanning method can be either interlaced or progressive. Interlaced scanning (also used in today's analog TV), indicated by an "i" in the video format, fills in the odd number lines (1,3,5,7...) and then fills in the even number lines (2,4,6,8...) until the frame is complete. Progressive scanning, "p," fills in each line consecutively until the frame is complete, like a computer display.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amaz-ing!, February 1, 2004

This review is from: Philips 32PT740H 32" HD-Ready TV (Electronics)
I did research for almost 3 months before deciding on an HDTV-ready TV. For HDTV-ready CRT TVs, this is one amazing product! Shipping was very fast, I ordered it on a Sunday and received a call from the local delivery company the following Wednesday to have it delivered. I only found it in one retail store for a bit cheaper, but it is worth it because it is delivered to your doorwithout any hassles.
Setup is a blast, it has a total of 4 RCA inputs, one component input and 2 S-video inputs.

Don't get me wrong, I am extremely picky when it comes to picture quality, but you have to see it to believe it! The colors are incredibly vibrant. It is time to put your DVDs to test with this TV! It has a bunch of sound options, including virtual surround, as well as 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratio options (the TV itself is 4:3).
For this price the quality and functions you get are almost rediculously extensive. I am surprised I didn't read any other review for this product anywhere else. The best fucntion of it is, it takes the analog signal and completes the lines available in NTSC, so you don't see any lines in your broadcast picture. Pixelation is very minimal.
I haven't purchased HDTV service from my cable company, but I am sure a TV that has such incredible abilities for analog pictures can also do a great job in handling HDTV. For the price, it is definitely a best buy!
