4.0 out of 5 stars LIVING WITH HUE - THE GOOD AND THE BAD June 14, 2013
Style Name:A19-Starter Pack| Product Packaging:Frustration-Free Packaging|Verified Purchase
First off Hue is expensive and not something anybody really needs. However, it's one of those things that has a high cool factor and if your into gadgets whats $200 bucks. I am a gadget guy and had the $200 so I went for it. Hue arrived via Amazon, so he was right on time and a day early. I couldn't wait to get him out of the box and give him a test run. It was incredibly easy to set up. I mean really easy, so don't worry about that. First download the app on to your Ipad or Iphone from the Apple App Store. Secondly plug the Hue Bridge into your router with the included ethernet cable (you need an open port on your router) and screw the pricey bulbs into a fixture. Then push the button on the Hue Bridge and grab your device and start making rainbow colored rooms. Everything worked perfectly the first time, the router found the bulds and the app controlled the whole thing. Really very cool, it worked exactly as it should.

One other thing about Hue, it does not work with Dimmer switches. Hue has a built in dimmer system, so you need to switch out the dimmer switches or keep them on full power all the time. That is easier said than done as by habit you turn the lights off when leaving a room. Not having the switch turned on makes the light bulbs not respond, So you need to have all the lights switched on with power flowing. Hue then controls the power to the lights via the bulbs,

Living with HUE

Your whole life you are conditioned to turn off lights when you exit the room. You just flip the switch and its done. Same thing for turning on the lights, its easy and simple. Hue changes this simple everyday thing into a much more complicated process.

At first, I could only justify this $200 gadget as a new fun "toy". Well, they are a TON OF FUN, especially if you add one or more Hue apps. Visitors love them and most buy their own set soon.

IMPORTANT COST JUSTIFICATION: We quickly realized these are enhancements to our home which are totally worth the price. Our expectations were far exceeded and in 3 weeks we went from the 3 pack starter kit to 8 bulbs, yes 5 more bulbs at $60 each and we are totally happy with them. We were sold this technology after only a month and will never go back, this is the future of lighting.

Update Oct 2014: We added two physical Hue Tap switches, now you don't have to use the iPad/iPhone! See how we use them below. Some of the outdated reviews here mention the lack of a physical switch a problem, that's now solved. Each Hue Tap can have 4 scenes programmed and NO battery! This means you can place the Tap anywhere, for instance, our bedroom tap is half way down the stairs on a ledge, the kitchen Tap is on a counter. Each of the 4 buttons can be any scene, even OFF. Everyone is amazed at the range the Tap has with NO battery!

Update Sep 2013: We added a Hue LightStrip over the fireplace lighting the wall only. And two more in a round window, WOW!

Here's how we use them:
* Control lighting color/intensity for activities like watching TV (blue), entertaining (purple), cooking (various colors), etc.
* Automatically turn on Living Room (med/blue) and kitchen night lights (low purple) at 8:30 , bedroom night light at 11:00 (red). They all turn off 1:00am if we forget.

If nothing else from my review, remember my caution that this product is constantly evolving and improving over time. Therefore some of the complaints or limitations in the old post no longer exist, and what I describe now might change at a later date (though I plan to buy many more of these and update the review).

I'll start with the issues which may prevent you from running an LED bulb at all.

First - size and shape, as this is a major consideration if the bulbs are in an exposed fixture. These Hue are "A19" size, which is the same size classification as your "regular" US light bulb. These are slightly taller, by a half centimeter or 1/8 inch but they're still considered A19. They certainly look larger than that because of the cone shape. (I'm desperately waiting for Philips to offer GU10 sized bulbs in the US, as I have those, and some candelabra fixtures could easily convert to GU10 also)

Another word on fixture applicability: most (maybe all) LED bulbs instruct you to not mount them upside down or in a totally enclosed fixture. LED bulbs generate less heat than incandescent, but they still need to _shed_ that heat because they are electronics. This is hard for some folks to understand, especially if they are new to CFL or LED. That said, you are _probably_ OK mounting upside down or in a closed fixture if you keep in mind that you're violating the warranty and taking a risk the product may break. These are indoor rated bulbs, Philips has stated they're safe outdoors if shielded from water (but outdoor is not covered by warrantee).

You get a WIRED radio bridge which acts as the Hue controller. The bulbs themselves do not have Wi-Fi, but they do use a form of wireless networking (ZigBee, if you're curious).
